So, let get this straight, some people are upset because the "conspiracy" plots are becoming more prevalent. Well, if you watch the show for its entertainmet value, who cares, as long as it's entertaining?

The point is that if we want to watch dramas about government conspiracies, we can go and watch the X-Files. I personally don't like the X-files any more for that very reason, and so to see the same sort of banal shit creep into Stargate is a tiny bit irritating, and makes me think "for fcsk's sake I might aswell switch over to the X-files". Stargate has many of its own quite remarkable merits, it does not need to borrow stuff from other shows.

Well let's try and work this out shall we. These are rough calculations that I did:

Assuming DVD video is 768kbps, that's 96 kbytes per second required for the video. Over a minute that's 5760kb.

Now let's assume that 6 channels of audio are encoded at 160kbps (being generous). That's 20 kbytes per second per channel, giving 120 kbytes per second for all channels, which is 7200 kbytes per minute for audio.

5760kb plus 7200kb is 12,960kb, which is 12.65mb of memory required to store one minute of film with 6 channel audio.

I don't know about you, but I had PCs with 12mb of RAM 6 years ago.

Of course I could have done all that completely wrong. You did mention HD video, and I have no idea what the bitrate on that is but surely it can't be that amazing. I've got 64mb of RAM in my PDA, I'm pretty sure they can get that into a 17" AV unit.

Again, unless some genius figures out how to bring holographic recording to the home, consumer-grade recordable DVDs won't have two layers. This is why their capacity is halved compared to commercial DVDs

I'm very confident that it's only a matter of time before that happens though. Granted it won't be tommorow and it won't be cheap, but it will happen.

I personally have no need for recording devices. As a satellite subscriber anything I want to watch usually comes around once a fortnight on the repeats anyway :)

My DVD collection is also something I'm concentrating on. I never collected VHS, I was always waiting for "the next format", that didn't degrade over time and was a little more convenient than a VHS, and lo and behold we have it, DVD, hurrah.

Yes yes, DVD MPAA DCMA, other abbreviations, are evil, rah rah.

It's a Celeron 400, with 64Mb RAM, 4.3gb disk, 52x CD ROM, onboard VGA (including composite and s-video TV-out), USB, Sound, 100-baseT network; and I picked it up for £89 GBP ($129) second hand. It doesn't have any expansion slots though, so if you're not happy with any of the onboard peripherals you're a bit stuffed.

It's not quite as small as the ones in this article, but it's definately cute, and goes well with all my AV equipment. I'm currently looking for a wireless keyboard and mouse for it.

They don't make this particular model any more of course with that spec, but I do believe they sell a "modern day" equivalent, for about 700 quid, with a TFT screen and a 1Ghz processor or something, I didn't pay much attention to the new one.

  17. Define "live"? on .museum TLDs are Live · · Score: 1

Since the .museum TLD is still in its experimental phase, these domains haven't been delegated to their registrants yet, but resolve as CNAME records in the TLD root, pointing at the other domains each site already has.

Thus, .museum addresses can currently only be used as additional addresses for sites that already have some other domain. MX records haven't yet been set up, so email to these domains won't yet work

So when you say ".museum TLDs are live", what exactly does that mean? "Live, unless you want to do anything other than point a CNAME at your website"? That doesn't seem very "live" to me. Another half-arsed botched TLD job. *sigh*.

I bet the .museum payment system is "live".
