I'm at Tech too. I love the fact that the poster is an Anonymous Coward. Of course, having heard of all the hassle Acidus got from the administration on the hill over explaining the vulnerabilities in the BlackBoard / Buzzcard system, I can't really blame somebody for not admitting to screwing with the grades of 300 people by skewing the curve.

  2. Re:Okay, that's pretty bad.. on Nintendo Quarterly Profits Down 80% · · Score: 1

I would think that the GBA could suffer some losses in sales. It is, after all, the best-selling non-pc platform of all time, IIRC, and has hundreds if not thousands of games.

It could just be that everybody who has one, wants one right now. When the GBA mini's come out this fall, sales will shoot back up for no real reason. Skeptical of this? See: iPod mini. It had less space, cost more, and people lined up outside Apple stores like crazy.

  3. An interesting sim... on Interactive Drama Prototype 'Facade' Released · · Score: 1

but not exactly graphically in-depth. I saw it previewed at a gaming symposium on interactive worlds last spring at Georgia Tech.

The couple's emotions and emotional responses are the big thing here. It's funny to watch their marriage pretty much break up because you compliment the hostess on her dress, when her husband / boyfriend / whatever hasn't even looked at her in ten months, or whatever the premise is supposed to be. This will be mildly entertaining, but not rememberable.

  4. Argument for FOSS on An Open Source Alternative to Blackboard? · · Score: 1

One of the valid arguments for F/OSS software of this type which I often hear from my professors is the high cost of commecrcial systems (in our uni's case, WebCT) based on the fact that not all professors choose to utilize the system or the fact that not all class types are suited to this sort of system.
Unless your schoolsystem plans to have EVERY educator use the system regularly and to its full potential, a commercial solution probably won't be the best answer. Sure, all those bells and whistles on the "big boys" sound great, but chances are that your teachers aren't going to want to learn a complicated system, or regularly check that they've added all the new assignments, etc. Just some food for thought.

  5. Great game on Spore Hands-On Impressions · · Score: 2, Interesting

I had the opportunity to see Will Wright personally demo Spore at the Living Worlds games conference a couple of months back at Georgia Tech...and it looked incredible. The whole reaction and scripting driven system just made everything look awesome, and funny little creatures with razor sharp teeth, and extra hands growing from their posterior make for good laughs. The whole content-compression ratio, or however he described it is what will make the multiplayer universal thing great here though...a few kb of "dna" and you've got thousands of creatures across thousands of player's game worlds.

  6. Following the tradition... on Adkison Releasing Collectible Poker Chip Game · · Score: 1

Following the tradition of countless "collectible games," you can bet that certain chips will end up selling for ridiculously high prices. It brings a painful new meaning to "blue chip."

  7. Re:POS on Magnetic Stripe Snooping at Home · · Score: 1

I believe Hoffman's interest in this project originally started because of Georgia Tech's use of BlackBoard's magnetic card system for our student ID's. The "BuzzCards" can be used around campus for vending, and general purpose ID (in several forms...9 digit printed ID, magnetic stripe, photo). There was a lot of controversy when an article he wrote was published in 2600 under the handle "Acidus." The article told about the system's shortcomings and explained how easy it would be to middle-man one of the vending machines for free stuff. This eventually ended in a gag order, if I remember correctly.

I could have sworn that I saw Donkey Konga on the shelf at an EB here in Sweden the other day...Is it already out WITHOUT the bundle? It wasn't in the "presale" section of the store with things like Half-Life 2 and Halo 2, but that makes a grim sense of its own. I'll look again.
