    Sure. In a high school in a city near my place of living in the glorious days of my reckless youth, they lost the blueprints of all wirings and plumbing: electricity, water, everything. The building was about 100 years old and the only man who had seen the blueprints died. During a major renovation they had to re-chart everything.

    There is a solution: increase the powers of European Parliament. The EP will make dumb decisions too (like recent attempt to call Auschwitz a "Polish concentration camp" and refusal to say openly it was run by Germans), but they will have more of a democratic mandate than current decision made by the Council.

    So it is google's fault that some people are functionally illiterate? I can tell the difference between the search results and the ads. They are very, very clearly marked. What should google add? "HEY PEOPLE! THESE ARE ADS!!! BEWARE!!! BIG, GREASY, STINKING ADS!!!"

    The first HD I bought was a 1.6GB WD Caviar. Still in service, almost 8 years after purchase ;-) Then I bought two disks, one from IBM (30GB DeskStar from the (in)famous series) and another from Seagate (60GB Barracuda IV), and they both failed after 2-3 years. Depressing, isn't it?

    why does this difference has an effect over the time both objects move at constant speed ? The ship accelerates first, then during so long as it will be at constant speed the aging process wil take place. it will then accelerates back toward earth and again, aging will happen during the way back. it will accelerates again to match earth's speed and land. if it went a bit farther before coming back, the age differences shouldbe greater because we would apply the formula on the time of travel at constant speed. (neglecting the comparatively very short accelerating parts of the trip).

    The problem is, this part can't be neglected.

    More people stop using their Windows PC for gaming in favor of a Gaming Console because of the high cost of upgrades. Have you seen the cost of the NVidia 6800 video card?

    That's not entirely accurate, either, but at least it wouldn't involve people actually dying (like chucking rocks at cars on the highway could).

    So many things in our lives depend on computers, that someone might die because of a computer virus. Of course, this would mean some incompetence on the side of some admin, but morally and legally, the virus author would be guilty.

    What's the point of asking about original intention? The Coal and Steel Union was formed to reconcile France and Germany and take European heavy industries under control, so that there would be no more wars between united countries. We've moved ahead a lot since then and comparing today's EU to Monnet's Union is comparing apples to oranges.

    The unelected C want to pass this directive (despite the member states' governments, the EU Parliament, the public and the European software industry being against it) as a certain large US software company is bribing their commissioners.

    Child molesters fall in a few different categories. Some are people who are sexually attracted to mature bodies, but do not bother when this body is only 14 years old. Those are plain morons and deserve a slap on the wrist ("check her ID!"). Some are people who would rather have sex with adult women, but are so shy (and have weak enough morale) they go for younger girls, because they feel more corageous towards them. They should be punished (to make them understand their shyness is no excuse for what they did), of course, but not for life. They can be treated and act like normal people. The last group is people who are sexually attracted to children. They are the most problematic, as treatment is hard. Inhibiting their sexual potency (chemical drugs) seems to be the best option. I think most of them would welcome this, and the minority which doesn't will have to be closely watched for abnormal behaviour. It makes no sense to put them in jail for much longer than we put somebody for manslaughter, or even murder.

    I didn't have the patience to read the article (Slashdot effect), but I think they could measure the how the hydrogen (and other elements') emission lines are shifted because of Doppler effect. If those clouds are so fast, they emit a lot of light, and it should not be frustrated too much. The precision of measurements must surely be good, since the error bars must be lower than 0.1% of c.
