  1. Re:bah on Microsoft Blocking Wine Users From Downloads Site · · Score: 1

Back in October 2003 I think it was they went and announced they would be switching msn to a new protocol, which would deny 3rd party applications from connecting. IIRC it was a close one, gaim had a new version out like a day or two before the new protocol came into effect. Give it time and I'm sure wine will find a way around, just like gaim did.

You don't... My experience with windows update is that it is useless. I keep one machine running windows xp just in case, and with the exception of service pack 1, no updates have ever been installed. No virii, no adware, no popups, no spam, ever. (and yes, it is actually connected to the net)

  14. It really means nothing on PG-13 Rating Turns 20 · · Score: 5, Interesting

What I don't get, is that the rating systems are inconsistent. Here in Quebec, most movies that are rated R elsewhere are rated PG-13. Take Hannibal for instance, I believe in the U.S. it was rated R, in Quebec it was PG-13 or maybe even PG-14, and in Brittish Columbia I think it was rated PG. How can anyone make sense of anything when the rating system is inconsistent? If you ask me, it's just a waste of time, completely meaningless.

It's what astronomers call a Hot Jupiter. The Hydrogen would be gradually ripped from the planet, and this would actually give the planet a "tail" of sorts. Theoretically, once enough of the hydrogen was ripped off the planet will eventually be destroyed. It's unknown how they formed, but it is believed that many of the Jupiter type planets, which are quite common, are actually failed stars, sometimes called Brown Giants.

  18. Re:We can get humans there on NASA Gives OK to Fix Hubble Telescope · · Score: 1

Space travel in general. Until Columbia, there had not been a serious accident in manned space flight since the Challenger tragedy. IMHO, NASA was becoming a bit too overconfident. The public at large saw space travel as routine. There is nothing routine at all about space travel, and I think NASA itself was beginning to forget that, at least until Columbia.

  19. Re:We can get humans there on NASA Gives OK to Fix Hubble Telescope · · Score: 1

It is a matter of safety. I agree with O'Keefe's reasons for not sending a manned mission. Hubble's orbit never brings it anywhere near the ISS, in fact, it's on the other side of the planet. If something does go wrong, they have absolutely no safe place to go. With the current state of the shuttles the possibility of an emergency refueling and launch is just completely out of the question. Columbia threw into sharp perspective how dangerous it really is. We lost a lot of good people in that tragedy, and while yes, it goes with the territory, safety should definitely come first.
