I am way too clumsy to be trusted with one of these things. I have visions of my self slipping and dragging everything where it is not supposed to be dragged. Or something. Maybe I just fear change.

For a about $50 you could get a 486 laptop with a distro of some for of *nix on it. Hell, enterprise chuck out laptop's all the time. Why doesn't someone just recondition them and then palm them off to India at cost if they really wanna help people out there?

Seriously, $100... why, when you could probably organise computers for India for free with a little international logistics and som..... wait...

Actually scratch all that I just remembered we are capitalists. Silly me.

Is a simple "Good" too apathetic?

    Ok...

Computers should be like pets in my opinion; if you can't be bothered to clean them up and make sure they are ok you shouldn't be allowed to have one.

Addtionally if your "pet pc" hurts someone else because you don't look after it right... How about you become legally responsible for it; just like if your dog goes postal and eats a local kid.

Mandatory IQ tests for online computer usage!

Just in case: I am not being 100% serious here. You never know on /. someone may not get it...)

  8. Paper About This... on Secure Hard Drive Deletion Appliance? · · Score: 1

I recently wrote a paper on this topic http://www.whitedust.net/article/7/ and during the course of the research it became clear to me that the only sure way to absolutely and unrecoverably delete data from a HDD is to slag it in acid. Anything else has a relatively high margin of error. Think about all those old HDD's you chucked out after a PGP diskwipe... and what is most likly still recoverable off them. Be afraid.
