Another thing you have available with perl that isn't anywhere else I'm aware of, is the ability to create a crippled interpreter that does not have access to certain classes of functions (forking or command execution for instance) to use to run an untrusted script. Here is a quote from the FAQ for the Penguin module on CPAN: it can act just like java does, except with a vastly improved security model

  2. Betraying The Promise Of Modularity on Linux Kernel 2.2.14 · · Score: 1

Yes. ptrace can provide a freeze/unfreeze, if
you can marshall the open pipes somehow; with
a "hibernate" system call that shut everything
down in a resumable state you could resume from
a new kernel with your uptime intact

Additionally it seems that the promise of modularity, which is that you will only need to
get the upgrades for your particular hardware, is
not being kept at all; I find myself downloading
millions of lines of code to fix problems with hardware I do not own when all I want is one particular feature.

I wonder how tricky it would be to make a database
that you could upload your .config file to and
download the patches pertaining to what you will
    actually build... Comments?

  8. Why there was even AlphaNT in the first place on Ixnay WinNT on Alpha · · Score: 1

Remember the bif foofaraw about Digital suing Intel over patent infringement? The reason NT was ported to the Alpha chip was for the speed. Now the pentia (and other intel offerings) have the speed too. The lab full of NT multias had that little steel tube screensaver chugging around faster than it chugged around on the 486es. This is no longer the case.
