  1. Blackboard's Quality on Blackboard's "Pledge" Not to Sue Open Source Software · · Score: 4, Insightful

Well, it would be one thing if blackboard actually had something to offer, but unfortunately in comparison with other open source (or web apps brewed within the edu) there really isn't much contrast. Meaning, if Blackboard had some desirable features that would be worth paying for, it would be more tempting to purchase it, obviously. Unfortunately, every feature they currently offer can be coded internally rather easily (my school proves this quite well), or it can be added in by some other module - for instance a php nuke forum.

Maybe in realizing this - but realizing the latter point that they would be competing against their own potential customers decided it would just be really bad PR.

We do moderate comments, I'm not sure if you realized that though. It works differently for a reason though, /. doesn't trust everyone for a reason, and they tried a similiar aproach to what digg does now a long time ago. In any case, the result is that you get to mod comments every so often, rather than every time. I prefer this over giving everyone the ability.

Really, WinXP is rather superb in comparison to any other previous MS OS, and not only that I think your statement may only apply to a security standpoint. Ultimately, I could almost say you're trolling.

So unless you have the cash to move one of those secret spy satellites from earth or lunar orbit (Because they are too far away if left in earth orbit), the only way you're going to see them is to go land on the moon again.

These pictures were in fact taken from lunar orbit. So, maybe it's not such a hoax afterall.

You will not find a kid who is failing any subect who has parents who are interested and involved in his school work. You forget about learning disabilities. My brother had ADHD quite bad, and my mother would spend countless hours working with him on his homework, only to find him narrowly pass a test and at times fail it. It was really really hard for him to do better, and the medication didn't seem to help. I don't know what to say, but I disagree that not all kids have an equal opportunity in school.

I for one expect no privacy at work, because I am being paid and am using their equipment.

Ok, so in order to protect my privacy I would gladly bring my own computer or purchase the computer I work with at work so that way it's my property and therefore my actions cannot be logged. I don't mind emails, files, etc... being monitored as they go over the network as that is proper and important to upkeep information security.

However, there is no choice for the employee in these cases but to accept the fact that their every action will be logged. Bringing your home computer to work would be considered a breach in security, and buying your work computer is laughable. These employees must hope therefore, that their boss/audit personel will be responsible and will not abuse this information. (I.E. Bank logins, etc...)

  16. Re:Thank GOD. on Texas Wireless Ban Has Failed · · Score: 1

Public wireless does not necessarily mean that it's "good", it just means that there will be a standard and that standard may limit each user's bandwith to a certain point. And I'm sure in certain areas it wouldn't be worth connecting on, thus opening the business up to the private sector. I don't think the government will be that big of a problem when it comes to competition. If anything, people will probably just become pissed off because they don't have a wireless device to take advantage of this with, and then complain because they have to pay taxes on it.
