Transmeta hasn't the horrid reputation for vapourware as Microsoft does. Even if this WAS the Transmeta X-Box in stead of the Microsoft X-Box, I believe that the responses would still be the same... They would still be skeptical, although perhaps more optimistic and hopeful as Transmeta doesn't have Microsoft's reputation for Vapourware and trickery. I won't believe Microsoft's efforts until I see their X-Box and use it. An X-Box optimized demo is nothing to be astonished at, and should be taken with a pound of salt.
This will truly be one of the major factors that draws more people to Linux. "But will it run my windows programs?" is one of the most frequent questions asked by those unfamiliar with Linux, and when Wine is stabilized, it can! Happy is the day when we can break open the Gates of Microsoft and open the Windows.
You're posting on a PUBLIC bulletin board. Anyone can view it. You should be able to quote it, as it is a public board. If you don't want people quoting you, don't post. Have a private peer-to-peer discussion if you'd like, but if you post it, it's public domain material.
It would be nice to ask permission of the poster before quoting though, but I don't believe it is necessary.
This is just like Intel to force someone's inferior technology with their name. Another reason to buy AMD.;) It's pretty scary how many people won't buy the clearly superior Athlon because it's not an Intel... that kind of small mindedness sickens me. Just like the people who 'don't trust' open source software because it wasn't hammered out of some conglomerate corporation. I must agree with Tom on this one. Rambus saw themselves on the way out, so offered themselves to the major computer players and managed to make a huge amount of money in the process.
Then that's your problem. Get some cordless headphones so you can wander around and listen at the same time! that's what i do, and people always look at me all weird when i laugh out loud.
What this reminds me of, is the James Bond movie with the oil rig. Why not just build a drilling rig in international waters, armed to the teeth, with triple-redundancy systems that is completely self-sustainable? now THAT would be cool.;)

The 2600's Off the Hook and Afterdark streams with which I am involved ("airs" every tuesday night from 8 PM EST until whenever) is broadcast using AOL Shoutcast on a Cable connection. It is also mirrored by several others, including Fearfree's Hotsoupmedia and Connect[] radio (irc://irc.2600.net:6667#connect). No expensive equipment is required at all, although we'll be getting a mixer for phone call-ins, we use Dialpad now for outgoing. If you're interested, check us out 8 PM EST on irc.2600.net:6667, #offthehook and see us at http://oth.n3.net or email us at radio@rewtme.dhs.org.
HOW CAN THIS BE? Remember the "good 'ol days" of MS-DOS? Er....
But anyways, I feel this is a great victory for anyone who has been forced into the Great Struggle*, but will this really change anything? I'm sure SOMETHING will happen, and I feel that Microsoft's inferior products are on their way out or at least on their way to a lower standing in the software chain, but maybe it's just me... I know some extremely... ignorant people who will ONLY use microsoft products and NT servers... they say that they "don't trust" Linux... But... Well, my point is, I hope this is the end of M$' reign on the software world... I mean, $800 for MS Office when you can get Corel Office 2000 for $50 is just outrageous!
That just my $0.02 CDN (~$0.014 US)
* The Great Struggle refers to getting '98 to run properly... by God, it's been a helluva battle...
(although his argument about sneaking into the theater is pure hogwash)
yes this is true. if i BUY the DVD and cannot play it because i don't run windows, i still payed for the DVD, his "ticket." If i buy a ticket at a movie theatre, do i have to pay for the projector as well? I dunno, I don't really like this guy and how he is so closed-minded. We need someone with some technical knowledge in the area. And even if you do use DeCSS to get a degraded copy of the movie, you still wouldn't be getting the best experience. i'd think it's worth the $20 for a surround-sound high-res version of the movie, but not if i have to pay for the player! This is, i believe, the principal argument of this case. These people don't understand Linux and OSS, and arrest people because they want to use THEIR media on THEIR machine. And they still don't get that fair use policy.
3 hours, really??? wow... I do get 30 hours out of mine, but that's with the VMSS off. I can get probably 20 with it on. I usually replace my battery every 2 weeks.
Hullo. I recently bought myself Panasonic's very very amazing Shockwave Metal RQ-SW99V Stereo Radio Cassette Player and it is a very amazing piece of technology. It runs off of ONE AA BATTERY for 30 HOURS and has Panasonic's amazing VMSS technology (aka Brainshaker) that MOVES to the music. Also, no skipping (!) with a 120 minute cassette for $1.50. Some people may not like this, but it suits me perfectly as I can record episodes of Off the Hook and listen to them over and over, and just set up a 2-hour MP3 playlist for ambient listening during travel. Another feature some may like (I do) called TPS, where you press the + button to go to the next "track" on the tape. it looks for the next period of silence and resumes playing. Also, it has a remote control on the headphones, complimenting it's lightweight and perfect size for a pocket. I really like this player and think it was an incredibly excellent value for only $100. If you don't mind using cassettes again, I would very much recommend this player. Thank you.
You know what the sad thing about this is? It's very close to the truth. Nowadays, if you threaten an existing mega-corporation's profits, you'd better believe that you'll be in trouble. And nobody will hear of it, as the media, the government, and possibly your friends are all controlled by this mega-corporation. Next thing you know, you're in prison being tortured with rats by a corporation known as BB Industries because you know how to allow people to use BB's products in an environment they can't control! The hierarchal system will never work, as long a humans are human... corruption, power... this is why Linux, OSS and the Independent Media is a Good Thing (tm). Grassroots is the way to go. (Down with BB!)
Still, it is simple enough to get a CD Player that will play these CDs, hook up the audio out to your audio in, record it, and encode it into an MP3! I doubt anyone'd know the difference. it's not as if you're using a MICROPHONE or anything. How would the quality be "so bad"? a direct audio (it's analog, but so what?) encoding into a wav would sound just as good, i think. and then you need just put it on a CD. voila!
A while ago, I remember that Emmanuel Goldstein of 2600 Magazine (Host of the popular hacker/phreak/tech radio show, off the hook) declared himself President of the Internet. He is the unquestionable master of the 'net.
look in the Off the Hook archives at http://www.2600.com/offthehook and look for that episode.
How can we possible "ditch the am"? if you'd noticed, AM radio interference comes from anything... your monitor, computer... even your mouse! But these stations are broadcasting at a much higher amplitude... and AM radio covers everything from Medium Wave (AM) and Shortwave and many other bands. We need to find some way to protect our DSL lines from outside interference. You can't eliminate the interference because of inferior technology.
That sure sucks. Told ya they should have shielded those lines.
