I just converted all 3 gifs I use on my site, and one doesn't look as it should. The transparency doesn't work correctly... and isn't that why you'd use gif in the first place? Maybe i'll wait for full browser support...
also, i've noticed that ALL graphics on the GIMP website are.GIFs. Looks like they have some work to do...;)
I know that my modem (A Diamond SupraExpress 56i Voice) works in Linux with no hassle. Put it in, echo ata >/dev/ttyS0, it works. couldn't be simpler...
If you ask me, those 'winmodems' are just sound cards with phone jacks. I would want a hardware modem even if I was using only windows...
I'm tired of it. Yes, this is a tool that has the potential to cause great harm. But really, all it does is make observations based on trends. This is not inherently a bad thing!
Nuclear technology also had the potential to cause great harm, but it could also be used for good. Look what happened!
These additions would be very interesting, especially in how these things would be used, ala Sci-Fi movies. Things like Card Readers would also be revolutionary for personal banking. If you could get one compact unit, similar to the Palm, except with a built in card swiper, you could have wireless banking! Need $10? Here, take my card. Swipe it on their palm, deduct $10... Hell, eliminate the card altogether! But this of course will open up whole new issues of security.. My point is, I can't wait until things advance so far to the point of Star Trek PADDs, or those things in Earth: Final Conflict. You can already have a PADD, just a palm with a wireless modem. An ultra-thin, ultra-light, ultra-hi res text reader with lots of memory would be perfect for people like me, who want to read something everywhere they go. But of course, the publishing companies would complain...;)
I completely agree with you on your final point. I know that i would have never purchased Riven if i had not "borrowed" a copy of Myst from a friend. In fact, i probably would have never heard of it. The same deal with Space Quest... A borrowed copy of Space Quest III resulted in my buying of Space Quest 4, 5, and 6. This is the same principle of "Try before you buy." I'll use it and try it, and, if i like it, i'd probably buy it. If I use some excellent software, i'm willing to pay for it, even if just to give thanks to the makers. But, then again, since i started using Linux, i really don't have any borrowed software... So i say Long Live the GNU Revolution!
It all boils down to money, mr. eries. If all of these features didn't make users continually re-purchase the software (like "upgrading" to Windows 98, or 98 SE) it probably wouldn't be done. Almost all of the software that i use is free (and legally so!). But the common user wants software to be easy-to-use and helpful, (like "Clippy" in MS Office... Ugh.) so they would invest the money for these new features. They think that if they pay money for software, they'd be getting more performance than a free product; in most cases that is not true, as you probably know. People have to realise that in "CyberSpace" the old rules don't apply. Software is not really a tangible thing like a donut or a car is. Thus, the standard rules and laws can not apply very well. Just my 1 1

Even the Astronomical Unit (AU) is metric, as in it is based on the distance between the earth and the sun, which means it is based on the sun's gravity. the metre is based on the distance from the equator to the poles (or something like that) miles per second? metres per second? notice how they always use metric in Star Trek?
This is a perfect example of GNU and the open source community. We provide free alternatives to commercial products that are available, and as an added bonus, it has no export restrictions! Why is it that free software written by hackers in their basements almost always better than something you would pay for? It all comes down to money... people are rushed to release their programs, and try to patch it together from others' code to try and save time. Corporate giants (primarily Microsoft) have taken the art out of programming. Computer programming is indeed an art, not a money-making scheme. Let's keep it that way.
It would be very convenient if the technology was commercially available for a page-sized, ultra-thin, high-res display device with bunch of RAM or maybe a flash card. But this would open up a whole new issue about book copyrights, the same thing that's going on with music and software piracy... Yet another headache.
"Computers don't make mistakes, people do."---Bill Gates, even if you don't like the man, it's true. And people keep blaming their computers when windows crashes.... maybe we should listen more to bill gates and his infinite wisdom. Just like "640k of RAM should be enough for anybody".;)
yep if we were to find, or create, a tiny black hole, we could tow it right next to the earth and all our problems would go away. puncture the universe for fun and profit?
I think apple should make their quicktime format more open for a larger audience. If they stay such a closed format with proprietary technology, they will get left behind. This seems like the same deal with MP3 technology versus that other format with anti-piracy measures. What format do you think you'll use, the one that gives you a hassle, or the open alternative that anyone can use? If apple doesn't allow other platforms to use their technology, i'm sorry to say that they will be gone from the market.
Oh yeah, and first post?:)

hey, it's not like these people actually need a lot of money to continue their music. If they are making music because they love to make music, and not making music because they make a lot of money, then those are the kind of people that i'd want to hear. Other bands that rip off popular songs in order to make money will go and we will have people whose music is original and good. Look at sites like mp3.com, where everything is original, because it's free! We could see less repetitive rip-offs of other songs and more original music as lesser bands becomes established. I think that the music should be free, or pay only for the media (like 2 bucks for a CD, or download it for free, similar to the Linux distributions). If these bands make music for money, they don't deserve to be stars. That's my two cents. Hope you spend it well.

same scenario with the playstation consoles the old companies such as nintendo, who still uses technology such as cartridges, despite CDs and DVDs clearly being much more practical and having much larger capacities, think they can continue to practice this negligence of time. If they don't keep up with the times, they will be left behind. (Microsoft come to mind?) It may take time to get through to people, but once something is known, it cannot be stopped. Things like Linux and Copyleft are gradually becoming more popular. But, i'm afraid this dance between companies will continue, but eventually a superior standard will emerge, only to be toppled and another standard emerge... it is an endless circle, until we all die. But i've never owned a console, and never plan to. I was introduced early to computers with my first 486/33, and have since remained loyal to them. I shun any console system with their limted abilities, barely comparable to that of a PC. Some argue the price, but eventually they will become even, as console gamers demand the features of a PC (ex. PSX2 has a modem). So, forgive my rambling, as i must be off.
