I don't understand why everyone stops trusting every company that has decent growth. I've even seen people fretting about Google already. I mean, come on.
And this is probably a bad thing to say, but while I feel that Linux is much better than Windows & haven't used Windows in years as my primary OS, there is a place for everything, including Microsoft.
Working with companies like Microsoft and RedHat are essential for industry and people with personal vendetas against every large company usually don't come out on top. Just a thought, but I like that RedHat is making the effort to become an even more secure Linux distribution instead of sitting around making petty comments about Microsoft.
Upgrading a Linux distro, no matter which of the main distros it is, is not anywhere as problematic as a Windows upgrade. I am dreading when my friends & family start calling for me to upgrade them to Longhorn in a few years from Windows 98/ME/XP.
I'm glad I'm using Debian. If you follow the release notes, you won't have any problems...
If your project is worthwhile enough that a lot of people use it, it will generate some revenue, but open source software only generates large amounts of money for the big guys like Gnome, KDE, Mozilla, etc.
Of course, you could just post on Slashdot and the money could come pouring in... if you have a worthwhile project I state again. Instead, I would recommend going to the companies or individuals that use your program & ask them for donations.
That is really the question. Personally, I'd like all of the "script kiddies" to stay on Windows and leave Linux as the peaceful and safe place that I have grown to love.
Besides, this article has absolutely no point. There's always someone saying exactly the opposite as the author out there, & they're all just producing hot air. If he just used his time a little better instead of wasting it on this crap that people have been saying for years, then I wouldn't lose 2 valuable minutes of my life reading this. (Yes, I know it was my choice to read the article, but I didn't know how pointless it was when I began...)
The sooner you introduce them to Linux the better. I've been using Linux since 1997, when I was only 10 years old. It wasn't a problem for me, & the tools of today (e.g. Synaptic) are amazing. Dependencies are not a problem.
If you take a kid & give them Linux, it'll be just as easy to learn as Windows, & that's a fact. Of course, why should we even try? Linux isn't ready for the desktop! Next year will be its year. Oh wait, was that the next or the one after that? (sarcasm)
Blast. Just give it a chance. Anything is better than Windows 98...
If we spend all of our time worrying about Microsoft, who will program Linux? I very much appreciate this post because it encourages me to see Linux's progress.
If you are asking where to get that software, just go to www.openoffice.org to get OpenOffice and www.mozilla.org to get Firefox/Mozilla/Thunderbird. You can also visit www.sourceforge.net for a ton more OpenSource applications for all operating systems.
Wow. Reading these comments makes me hurt. This is a very bad example of the Linux community. Some people need to learn that Red Hat is not the enemy. They are not trying to stop CentOS from distributing at all for goodness sake!
All they want to do is protect their name. Is that all that bad? They aren't trying to restrict the GPL at all. They only want their name! Their name! Wait. Everyone is freaking out because they don't want to be affiliated with CentOS with their name?
Wow. People are way too quick to accuse. Everyone that gets angry at this post, please just learn some maturity and get over it. Let them have their name. If you have a problem with it, then just shut up and go back to using the crap that is Windows. The true Linux community doesn't need ignorance or hot-tempered fools. It needs skilled developers and dedicated followers.
I think you're being very unreasonable here. I don't understand why you are bashing Red Hat. They're on our side for goodness sake. Besides, they're not stopping CentOS from using their sources, they're just protecting their name, which is a perfectly legal thing to do.
And, to your comment about the GPL... I don't think mcrbids was saying that it was wrong for CentOS to use the Red Hat sources. He was just making a comment that they were the same.
You need to learn some self-restraint and stop accusing your allies.
I don't like Microsoft just as much as the next Linux user, but come on...
Good programmers know how to deal with the problems inherent in C/C++. Not to mention that those problems extending beyond.NET to all C/C++ environments.
Besides, why should anyone listen to the anti-C++ rantings of one of the top dogs in Java world. Just remember that today's security is tomorrow vulnerability.
And you are making it any better by attacking the conservatives? People need to learn to leave politics out of things. This is about fusion for goodness sake!!!
Being completely unattached to politics in this statement, it is amazing how we can go from a great article about fusion to a political/religious debate. People need to give it a break...

Sorry, but I just had to vent...

LOL! You just made my day! It's nice to see atleast someone has a sense of humor on /. still. All anyone does anymore is complain...
