Don't forget storing program configurations in a way that can be backed up. Of course, this would probably require getting rid of the registry.

Which would be a good thing.

Seriously, whoever came up with the idea for the Windows Registry should be shot, dammed to hell, and forced to hunt for obscure registry settings for all eternity.

Really, the RAID array may be the bigger problem. At least, if you're using a cheap RAID controller. Most cheap RAID controllers are "fakeraid" devices that offload most of the work to the system CPU. Think of them as the "WinModem" of RAID controllers.

It is possible to get them working under Linux, (Google linux fakeraid) but it's a bit of a pain in the butt. Unless you're going to dual-boot Linux and Windows, you're better off just using Linux's software raid.

Replacing the Windows boot screen with "STOLEN LAPTOP" is certainly doable. For extra fun, also hit the desktop wallpaper, Startup sound, and, if you really want to be obnoxious, every other system sound. Doing so in a way that would survive a drive wipe would be much more difficult.

You could compromise with storing all user data in a separate partition, which could be wiped via remote trigger. The idea of turning the laptop into one bit "STOLEN LAPTOP" announcement is too much fun to simply go with the remote wipe. Especially since most laptop volume controls are all software only. Heck, some BIOS update programs will let you change the image displayed on the POST screen.

Yes, we're claiming Windows ME was released after the merge. That's why it sucked so much is because it didn't use any of the NT codebase because MS decided 2k wasn't friendly enough.

Windows ME was "friendly" in the way that Special Ed kids are "friendly". They will generally try to be very nice to you, to the point of being annoyingly overbearing. You know they're trying their hardest, but you also know not to depend on them for anything important. If you want to play a serious game, forget it, as their tendency to fall over and/or crap themselves tends to spoil the fun.

I do have one big gripe with FF3--there's a bug where the tabs are not saved when you close the browser--even with the option set to such, it will open my home page, not the tabs I previously had open.

I noticed that too. I had assumed it was because I had the Tab Mix Plus extension installed, and it isn't listed as compatible with FF3. Don't know if this is the case for you or not, but here's a fix. Download the new version of Tab Mix Plus. The page Mozilla has for it has a dead link, but Download.com has it here: http://www.download.com/Tab-Mix-Plus/3000-11745_4-10503067.html I actually like the TMP session manager more than FireFox's built-in one.

Why is that I have this feeling that "Lawyer", "Incompetent" and "Crook" are oxymorons? I think you mean redundant rather than oxymoron. Now that I've done my pedantic duty, let's examine the three sets you mention to see how they overlap:

There are obviously lots and lots of incompetent people that are not lawyers. And of course, many crooks are not lawyers. However, the "Lawyer" set overlaps so completely with the "Crook" set to the point that "Lawyer" is almost a subset of "Crook". And of course, the Lawyer/Incompetent overlap falls almost entirely within the Lawyer/Crook overlap - because if you're an incompetent lawyer, than almost the only way to stay in business is to also be a crook.

Now, the RIAA seems to pull its entire legal staff from the place where "Lawyer", "Incompetent", and "Crook" all overlap. If you're sketching this all out yourself, you should have a very small section where "Lawyer" doesn't overlap "Incompetent" or "Crook". There, you will find NYCL and, maybe 1 or 2 other people.

You know, I had never thought about it before, but in a way you're right about Free Software as "Communism done right". Communism as an idea is not bad, except that the idea ignores everything we know about human nature, i.e. that people are selfish bastards who will get as much for themselves as they can while doing as little as possible.

But when we're dealing with non-physical property like software, it works, simply because people taking as much as they can doesn't reduce the amount available to others. "To each, according to their needs," really does mean everyone can have as much as they want of what's out there.

I think the correct phrase isn't "communism done right," but rather "Communism the only way it can actually work"

And then we follow it up with a bad war movie that throws it all away.

A lot of people recommend against Automatix. It tends to cause problems when you upgrade to the next version. I also recommend you download and install an Ext Filesystem driver for Windows. This will allow you to access your Linux data from Windows. There are several available - the one I use is at http://www.fs-driver.org/

Firefox is much nicer if you use the same profile under both OSs. Start up the Linux one first and configure it to your liking. Then boot into Windows. (You'll need to have already installed an Ext driver) Start, Run, Firefox.exe -profilemanager and create a new profile, but point it to your existing Linux profile at /home/USERNAME/.mozilla/firefox/RANDOMFILENAME.default

This means you'll have the same set of bookmarks, browsing history, tabs, etc... whether you're in Windows or Linux.

You can use the same trick with your email if you use Thunderbird for both Windows and Linux. Set it up under linux, then use thunderbird.exe -profilemanager
