I'd say cyber war means the making of human-killing machines, and that I have no plans to design or buy game machines with approval from the war dept, thank you very much. I'm not into being fooled, my money isn't going to DOD research and equipment, and if you want safety, security, you just don't go around showing off how well your "toys" kill, looking for enemies, then worry about how secure your gates are, that always works temporarily, not forever. See Rome, Greece, Spain, USSR, England, Germany, Japan, etc.

  8. linux vs windows, the users reasoning on Time To Dump XP? · · Score: 1

Studying the reasons users have for/against Linux etc ... There just aren't enough arguments _for_ Linux, unless you add in the open-source arguments, which have no immediate, concrete impact on pc usability. The main arguments are: a) it won't run a few apps -- b) ignorance & fear -- c) tech guys salaries & availability d) training users, apps that are harder to use. e) windows warez are free, so the licenses cost the same. Techs opinions are included- the apps and training. Compared to macOSX, issues are almost the same, except it's easier to use and OSX cost is usually higher, unless some osx86, warez version is used. OSX however has gained more users share than linux it seems, at 5%, vs linux 1%. So I'd conclude linux desktop adoption rates are related to usability, primarily. The clearest indicator to me came when desktops started being sold with Linux preinstalled and working, with warranties covering Linux use only. People go out of their way to get Windows on their PC. They want Windows, they are pleading for it, *paying* me to intall it -- without even knowing what it is, and knowingly voiding the warranty. In many cases they will do no more than Facebook and msn messenger, they really would be better off with Linux. Others tried Linux, but couldn't run one app, or figure out how to do something they always did. Many quit Linux simply because they prefer msn messenger to emesene, amsn, or gaim/pidgin.

  25. Re:News? on The Pirate Bay Sinks And Swims · · Score: 1

The pirate bay is down/up so often is it worth reporting everytime? If it was going to go down for an extended period then yes, but its barely been 24hrs.

One of the hot battles, firefights, front lines, of this copyright war, are the success or failure to keep any large, visible, wide-distribution information-sharing center up, be it a website, p2p technology, or DVD swap meet on a street corner. So I believe we're actually discussing the legal push and pull of our society's copyright law battle, The Pirate Bay is simply a symbolic, and perhaps strategic terrain, a battleground to be won or lost by each side. The particular battle that's lost or won is not important, it's the long term fight to conquer the public mind-share, in favor or against intellectual-property law.

From the point of view of money, the math of the fight is simple. They will keep fighting only as long as they see lots of money down the line. When they believe there is no possibility of making enough money on it anymore, they will start to give up. P2P is taking money out of the business, but not all of it at once. So it's a threat if it grows numerous, not if it simply exists in small numbers. If it stays in small numbers, they use written law, legal means. When it starts growing, they start getting tempted to use force, the abuse of power, any means at all. Just watch http://www.stealthisfilm.com/
