  1. Dell + Hyper-V on Reasonable Hardware For Home VM Experimentation? · · Score: 1

I recently bought a Dell 2950 III w/32 GB memory, dual quad-core processors, and (2) 1 GB SAS drives for about $4k brand new from Dell. I am running the Datacenter edition of Windows Server 2008 x64, however, you could also run the free edition of Hyper-V. The box supports x64 clients, and is very fast and stable.

I would suggest the tower model as the fans in the rack model are very loud. I would also suggest the Dell remote management card for an additional $250. It allows you to do just about anything remotely, even loading a new host OS w/virtual ISOs.

I'd have to agree with you as I took a similar route. However, YOU would probably succeed in most anything you do. Young people coming out of high school don't have the breadth of knowledge one receives with a degree; a good command of language helps you interact better with peers, managers and clients, for instance.

I own a successful business, but do not have a degree. Ironically, I look at an applicant's education, knowing that a degree will help ensure certain basic abilities (but no guarantees, of course). It also shows me they can finish what they start, which is always important. If an education is absent from their resume, I look at project experience and how well they articulated their role (with as few words as possible).

Different people have different things they look for in an applicant. I know someone that says he looks for applicants that have worked as a waiter or waitress at some point. He thinks they will be better at interacting with clients and others within the organization. Whether you agree with this or not, it is an interesting concept.

  3. DirecTV on TiVo to Go Released · · Score: 1

The software and HMO look very cool, however, it still will not work with DirecTV TiVo units; software rev. is still <4.x with no word of an upgrade date from DirecTV (if ever). If I'd known this prior to purchasing my unit in Dec. 2004, I probably would have opted for cable instead.

It seems like one should able to exploit this using the same method Google Suggest uses to collect completion suggestions, the XMLHttp object and JavaScript.

true genius will lie in the packaging: content, convenience....

I think the real money here is in the sale of the content, not the device. When someone develops a device that is cheap enough for places like Amazon to give away free with the purchase of say, two or three books, we'll have a winner. But, only if that device solves some of the other problems like good readability in all types of lighting and is easy to use and download new books.

One of the things I'd look for is durability. Right now I can take a book to the beach and not worry about dropping it or tossing it into box full of other beach stuff.

This new device or system would need to dispel the fears authors have about redistribution of their work without payment. My sister is a romance novelist with twenty+ books to her name; her biggest peeve is Amazon selling used books next to the new ones for a fraction of the cost. She receives no royalty on the used books. Perhaps e-books could eventually solve this for them, or make it worse. I don't know.

Several years ago I returned to my office after Christmas vacation to find a water pipe burst above my desk. My entire office was flooded and my computer, a 386, was totally flooded inside and no longer working. (It was running at the time.) Since I had recently upgraded a daughter memory card to 4MB for $1,600, I was pretty upset.

A few months later I decided to fire-up the computer again, just for grins. Now mind you, the entire motherboard and 4MB memory daughter card were COVERED IN SOLID RUST. To my surprise, it booted normally! I ran my Opus BBS from it another year afterward and the computer never gave me a problem.
