You missed his point - he doesn't want telemedicine on every call, he didn't say that he wouldn't notify the ER/ED of incoming patients.

Can't do that, not accurate enough for CDMA. There are backup timing sources at the base station, but they aren't always installed or working, and in any case they won't last more than a day or so. By the way, a lot of BITS clocks get timing from.... yep, GPS.

The cellphones don't use GPS, but the base stations do. After a period of time (varies between an hour and a few days), you would not be able to make any handoffs. Other cell technologies do also use GPS. Alltel, Verizon, Sprint and others would be affected for sure.

Sprint-Verizon actually would work out much much better, as they both use CDMA. I'm sure Verizon would buy out Sprint - those "mergers as equals" don't tend to work out all that well overall.

While I haven't RTFA yet, I would suspect that they're considering using some sort of Forward Error Correction (FEC). FEC pads packets/frames with enough redundant info so that the actual data can be reconstructed. All digital cellular methods use FEC to some extent as there's no time to go back and request another frame/packet be sent. Downside is that more data is sent and time must be spent to detect/correct errors.

  6. I'm liking Lookout for this... on Google Launches Desktop Search Tool · · Score: 1

If, like me, you have Windows and Microsoft apps - especially Outlook - foisted on you, then take a look at Lookout. It'll index everything, including PDFs.

It's meant most specifically for Outlook users, but it will happily index files also. This makes Outlook go from a pain to something much more useful.

  7. Speeding up Tivo hints {Re:To *really* fix tivo... on The Programmer Who Could Save Tivo · · Score: 1

Yes, this does well and truly suck. However, there are some things you can do to help your DirecTivo out. * Go through the channels and cut them down to just the ones you'll watch. Get rid of the PPVs, shopping channels and such (unless you want them). * Change the EPG to the Tivo style as other have mentioned, the DirecTV style is very slow. Better, but way slower * (This one blows) Keep the number of "now playing" shows down * (also blows) Get a new DirecTivo; I got a newer model and the response is much better. If your DTV unit takes 15 seconds to change channels, that's very high, I get 2-3 seconds.
