If I was a malicious virus writer, I'd probably start looking for exploits in the Vista beta the second I heard people spouting off it won't need anti-virus. I think we all know how the hacker mentality is.

Sony: Our CDs have uncrackable DRM!
Random Hacker: I cracked it. With a sharpie. And made a post on usenet telling others how to do so.
Sony: *scream*

I'm not saying that virii writers weren't going to attack Vista, but I think now I can say with about 80% certainty there will be a 0day vista exploit being exploited on release day.

Can anyone tell me why anyone uses Linux instead of OSX? I personally understand that not everyone can afford a Mac, but those who can, and hate wiindows, often go the linux route. Why? OSX is based on BSD, so it has a terminal, can runn free software etc. It also has a great GUI and supports apps I need for school, such as MS Office. (While writer is great the rest of Open office is a bit lacking) I think if Jobs quit jacking up the prices of macs to make their owners feel superior and started actually competing, OSX would be the consumer desktop, and unix/linux variants would own the server world.

Depending on your corporate culture (though personally I'd never work somewhere more concerned with appearances than worker productivity), I'd reccomend some music either on headphones if in a cubicle situation or softly playing in your office. Take a short break every 45 minutes. Once a day, have this "break" be your suck up period for your boss. Give him (or her) a general status report, inquire about any anything you need to ask, then ask him (or her) a few personal questions. You have no idea how asking how your bosses weekend went will help your career. Basically, when you take a break actually walk around, don't just read /.

I remember reading somewhere that classic games downloaded to the Wii could be stored on SD cards (I'm fuzzy on whether any other types of starage, IE usb hard drives). This alone has me conviced to get a Wii. Quite frankly, I'm tired of paying over and over to play the same classic games I had on the NES. I have a feeling piracy will be rampant with these downloaded Wii ports, and quite frankly I'm glad. Maybe that will convince Nintendo to start working on NEW content, ala "New Super Mario Bros" for the DS.

17. Summary: WORTH IT. on The DS Lite U.S. Launch · · Score: 1

I picked mine up yesterday... no interesting journey stories to tell though, I pre-ordered mine the day the USA release date was announced.

One thing I like is the new brightness settings. There are four, the lowest being equivalent to the old DS's screen. On just the second highest setting colors are very vibrant. It's hard to describe, but the games just look better.

The higher settings mean I can play on the bus fine. I used to have trouble with the old DS getting too much glare, not anymore!

The only flaw is the fact GBA games stick out of the GBA slot about an inch. If like me you're one of those people who hated playing classic Game Boy games on your Game Boy Advance, this will really irk you. I suggest picking up a used SP, that's that I use to play my old GBA games and they're getting pretty cheap.

20. Take the kid gloves off. on The Failure of Information Security · · Score: 1

Personally, I think the best way for a company to deal with user stupidity is twofold. First, give a class that teaches basics such as password security, how to use a virus/spyware scanner, polite email etiquitte. Have it catered, pay for their time. Then at the end, pass out printed material that matches what was covered, and announce anyone who causes a loss of productivity due to not following the guidlines of the acceptable use policy will be warned once, then fired. I have a pet theory. I call it the "Shit Smeared Stall Effect". No one would smear their home bathroom with feces. They have to live there after all. But a public restroom will probably be used only once per day. If you defile it, it won't effect you since the cleaning crew comes in that night and pretties it up. These people don't care about their work computers. What's the worst that can happen? IT takes their comp off to be re-imaged, and they sit and twiddle their thumbs for a while? That's hardly a deterrent.

25. iTunes + intellgent folder structure on Managing a Huge Music Collection? · · Score: 1

I use two methods.

First off, my music folder is very organized. Each major genre has a folder. In each of these folders are any sub genres. Inside the sub genre folder are all the artists, then each album is a folder in the artist folder.

So "Down In It" by Nine Inch Nails would be located at:
C:\greg\My Documents\My Music\Rock\Industrial\Nine Inch Nails\Pretty Hate Machine\Down In It.mp3

Also, I make use of smart playlists in iTunes. Each of my Genres gets a playlist. I have playlists that only consist of songs I haven't listened to in in a while, a playlist for my favorite songs (based on song rating of 4/5 or better).

I have a "new music" playlist that adds any song without a rating to it.

Between these two systems, whether I have iTunes open or I'm using explorer, I can easily find whatever music I'm looking for.
