  1. Good Work? on Tech Work in the Boonies? · · Score: 1

It depends what you consider 'good work'... If you want a job paying 100K+, good luck.

OTOH, if you want to get out of the rat race, you could easily put together a small consulting business and make a reasonable income, with the fringe benefit of making your own hours and living is the kind of place where you don't have to lock the door on your house... Ever.

For me, that tradeoff is worth much more than the difference in income. I live and work in a small Vermont town (population 3,000) with more programming/networking/consulting work than I can possibly handle.

  2. 1 year, 10 days on What's Your Earliest Memory? · · Score: 1

I was born on November 12th, 1962. JFK was assasinated on November 22, 1963, Exactly 1 year and 10 days later.

I have very vivid memories, not of knowing what happened (of course) but of both of my parents being very emotional, crying, etc. My mom moved my crib into the room with the television so she could do housework in front of it all day.

Years later, I reviewed my memories with her and she confirmed that everything had happened just as I remembered it, right down to her setting the ironing board up in front of the television.

My pet theory about memory is that new ones are formed when you go through an event that is either traumatic, or unique. That is why time goes faster for you as you get older. Less unique events == less memories made every year. This gives us the feeling that time is flowing faster and faster.

  3. Like THIS is ever going to happen on The Free State Project · · Score: 1

Anyone who thinks that something like this has a snowball's chance in hell of happening (before the gov't marches in to put an end to it) no matter WHAT the constitution protects, probably also believes that we have a 'voluntary' income tax system... and a democratic way of electing our leaders... and a representative goverment... I could go on and on. In short, it is a happy pipe-dream, nothing more.

  4. Re:Tools CD on What's in Your Toolbox? · · Score: 2, Informative

I've been thinking about making it available as an ISO soon. The issue I have is that a lot of the software I have on it is freeware, but some is shareware or has license restrictions about the distribution.

So while it may be free, I may not have the right to distribute it in a package like this CD.

If I decide to make a version I can distribute, I'll have to spend some time first looking into all the licenses and/or getting permission from some of the developers to include their software on the CD.

(There are also a few commercial programs I put on MY version that I'd have to take off before distribution.)

In the meantime, I've uploaded the listing of all the software that fits on the CD to this page:
    http://gallery.scanline.com/UtilityDisk/
so you can get a headstart making your own version. All program names and descriptions are listed, so you should be able to do a google search and find downloads of most of the things I use.

  5. Tools CD on What's in Your Toolbox? · · Score: 2, Informative

I finally got frustrated carrying a wallet of every CD I could possibly need, and even then not having the program I really wanted, so I made a custom 'tools' CD that I carry everywhere

I burn about 125MB of network tools (packet sniffers, traceroute and ping tools, hex editor, etc), system diag tools, boot disk images for every windows version from 95 to 2k, various 'toys' like tweakui, winzip, pkzip, and things I install a lot like Pegasus mail onto a 3.5" bootable CD (it boots to a dos prompt where I have over 3MB of dos diag tools available). It also detects/loads CD drives on booting. The final product is small enough to drop into my shirt pocket.

Then, in whatever leftover space I have, I put a few Mp3 files and winamp so I have some music to work by no matter WHOSE office I'm in.

This CD has been a lifesaver on dozens of jobs. Whenever I find better tools, I create a new version and burn about 10 copies (some for friends, 1 for the toolbox, 1 for the office, 1 for home, and 1 each for the glove compartments of my wife's care and mine so I NEVER am without it).

So far, I am up to verison 1.4 and finding new things to put on in every day.

  6. Ginger on What is 'IT'? · · Score: 4

Going on the assumption that the name 'Ginger' is significant somehow, I did a Google search for the word Ginger and other words like 'transportation' and 'Mythology' and 'flight'.

The most intriguing match I found was to the character 'Ginger' in Chicken Run.

A quote from the review "<I>...partly thanks to Ginger, who believes that he'll be able to teach her and the rest of the chickens to fly</I>".

Could this be an invention that will help us 'learn to fly'??

It is a GREAT spoof on every bad tv show fan site on the web. From blinking text and bad HTML, to contrasting colors and clashing background tiled images... It took a real talent to make something this bad on purpose!

Wile you are there, be sure to read the episode synopsis for the TV series. Just wonderful!

I propose that we ALL boycot the use of their product until they realize that the error of their ways. We should all just take a deep breath and tell ourselves that we don't NEED them anyway.

I'm sure the justice department would be interested in looking into the monopoly status of ALG in the Oxygen producing industry.

Who asked them to fix our Nitrogen in the first place??

On the other hand, I wouldn't hold my breath for a quick resolution to this issue.

  11. All I wanted to do was watch a movie!!! on The Matrix DVD Troubles · · Score: 1

I have a Creative DVD on my win98 box. I popped Matrix in as soon as I picked it up. Then spent an hour of anger and frustration getting it to run.
First, instead of playing the movie, the 'autoplay' "feature" launched a setup program. The program insisted installing PC Friendly(!) software I neither needed or wanted on my machine. I looked in vain for any way to bypass this step and just watch the ^%&*( movie, but every road lead me back to the install program.
Fine, so I finally gave up and let it start installing what it wanted to. THEN it notified me that I did not have a new enough version of IE, (I didn't have ANY version, I had spent a lot of time and effort getting rid of it). Before I went any further it offered/insisted/threatened to install it for me. Again, there was no way to avoid this if I wanted to see the movie.
NEXT, the setup complained about my Creative DVD drivers, and told me I would have to uninstall the old drivers and player, and install the new version they had so thoughtfully included on the DVD.
FINALLY I was ready to watch the movie (was it worth it?), but I still have problems with their poorly designed interface, and a mouse that registers clicks about 150 pixels below the menu button I clicked on, whick ended up being the next menu item down. This lead to a lot of confused and angry clicking through the damn buttons that were not taking me where they said they were, before I figured out the problem.
So now the movie runs, but I am no longer in any mood to watch it (on the other hand, seeing things blown up and shot may be just what I need).

Since when did watching a DVD turn into an IQ test? What does this say about life when every appliance in your house will be TCP/IP enabled?

"Honey, I finally got the new toaster installed, I had to download new drivers from toast.com and then flash the firmware. Just don't try to adjust the darkness, or it will crash."
