My hope is that internet distribution will enable artists who are being ignored by the record companies to get their work known. Part of the problem with the recording industry, is that it is obsessed with the million-sellers. If you don't sell that many, you're regarded as a nobody. The internet distribution system could make it viable for a small or part-time artist to get their work distributed economically. It could also give the music fan a wider choice
Go to the Linux PCMCIA info site and look at the supported cards list. If it's not there, you could post a message on the forum. 3com cards are generally well supported.
As other have said, Xeons are used mostly in servers. The people who buy these are less likely to be impressed by a small increment in clock speed. No one is claiming that Intel are about to change their tactics on desktop stuff, especially when the press is so full of hype on the 1Ghz <milestone>.
The standard JDK 1.2.2 for Linux doesn't contain a JIT, which may explain the performance difference. I'm not sure if the Sun Hotspot JIT is available as a separate package for Linux, although there are others.
there is a guy in Holland who has written a Linux From Scratch HOWTO. An earlier version of this appeared in Linux Gazette recently. Although it doesn't claim to be based on any particular distro, he does it by building the new system using an existing Linux system on the same machine. I suspect that you would end up with something based on your existing installation. http://tts.ookhoi.dds.nl/ products/lfs-howto.html
I use Slackware on my Laptop I like two things about it. First is Zipslack, which is a very easy way to install on any playform, and a good way to install if you don't have a CDROM drive. The other is that it comes with a selection of kernels, including one which has APM built in, save me the trouble of building one.

I don't have any problem with Netscape stabilty at present (version 4.61 under Linux). All you have to do is turn Java off.
Sure USB will become a standard. Some hardware vendors
are offering more USB Scanners (for example) than SCSI ones.
I understand the latest development kernels have USB
support, but support for specific devices is a bit patchy
