A while ago when trolls were abusing Google's "I Feel Lucky" button somebody posted some javscript that would warn you of it. I can't remember who it was, so I can't give credit where it's due, but it also works for the nimp trolls too.
Also, look at the numbers they're using. Choosing a random album from the charts, I put Led Zeppelin's Mothership into Isohunt, and got back just shy of 1,500 seeders and leechers, every one of whom is technically "making available" the entire album, which consists of 24 tracks.
At $9,250 per track, the RIAA seems to think they're owed nearly $315,000,000. From just one album, and just the results on Isohunt.
Years ago at university, a Software Engineering lecturer told us a tale of a mission critical system (I believe it may have been in an aircraft) that had a number of control computers working side by side, with a majority needed for an action to be taken. For added failsafeness, each system was developed and tested by a different team, with different methods, practices and technology.
Later on, during maintenance of these systems, it turned out that most of the systems contained the same bugs and the same problems, purely as a result of the way the developers worked, thought and how they'd learnt to program. This was from years back, but it would be fairly naive to think that this type of thing doen't happen any more - the state of the art may have changed, but programmers are still human.
Also, I seem to remember a while ago that the Brazilian government was upset at being charged vastly more than poorer countries for some USA-produced drug, and simply decided to ignore the patents on the drug and got an Indian company to cheaply mass-produce it for them.
If a cure/vaccine for HIV was tested and found effective, but then sold grotesquely overpriced, it's pretty likely something similar would happen the world over.
Gullible fool. Having learnt from all the murder tips given in the recent Hans Reiser stories CmdrTaco has obviously killed the other editors and is using kdawson's account to leave a false trail. You'll know it's true when kdawson posts a moving and heartfelt eulogy to Taco.

The article then goes on to FUD that code that attacks the sand box "must" be coming.
remember to include some errrors, so you can post a correction and get some more positive moderation for the second comment
So when are you coming back for your second dose of moderation? Or do I get to steal them because I beat you to it? Informative surely *fingers crossed*:-)
My response to 9/11 conspiracy theories, and that of several people I know, is that if the US government was capable of planning, executing and covering up something like that, do you not think that they'd have also managed to find some WMDs in Iraq?
This "problem" won't be solved until either gas is $10/gallon or we move to some kind of lighter transportation vehicles as the standard
Bad news there. In England fuel is currently hovering around 93p - 99p per litre, which works out at around $8.50 per gallon, and we aren't seeing any magical fixing of our roads and traffic problems. It's embarrassing when you can walk to work and overtake cars on the way.
Is this anything like the last GPP prototype we heard about? The one that had a brain the size of a planet, but anything you connected to it tried to committed suicide?
Let anybody, or any group of people, register as a ratings board. It could cost a small fee to register, and then people can subscribe to your ratings. TVs could be made to default to the current ratings board, so for most people it wouldn't make a difference, but if you wanted to use the Slashdot Ratings Group for your TV show tags/ratings, there'd be nothing to stop you.
If the system got more ambitious you could spend a little while tagging shows yourself and it could recommend rating groups that tend to agree with you.
FTFA, it seems like the Brits have relatively specific petitions, which is a good thing. OTOH, how many successful petitions will ever advocate higher taxes or anything that will require sacrifice?
Last time I had a poke through the petitions there were half a dozen drug-related ones. Five of them we in favour of relaxing drug laws, ranging from "controlled trials in tolerance areas" all the way to "decriminalise all drugs". On the other side, a single petition with a single signature, saying "pretty please, keep the drugs laws the way they are." It's a pretty unique stance:-)
My personal favourite is still this one though. Childish, me?
What's it like in your line of work? Do most lawyers live up to the stereotype? Is dealing with them as unpleasant as popular opinion makes out? It's very easy to just categorise all lawyers as Them and get all narky about it, but it's very rare you actually get a chance to ask someone about it. Any tales from the front?
The thing that I liked most about the test was that you could say "don't know" to the questions. When was the last time you met someone who could have an informed opinion on every single one of those topics? Should Schiphol Airport continue to grow? How should I know?
All that was missing from this one was a "don't care" option. Oh, and a question on software patents.
I'd like to see the PS3 do this. If Sony's offering can't make me a bacon sandwich then I'll just have to stick with Microsoft for all my culinary needs.

They're +5 Delicious!

Heh, and now my sig seems somewhat less useful...

Verbing weirds acronyms.
Change his name to Earl and sentence him to giving an apology - in person, individually - to everyone he's ever spammed...

File, you fools!

It would also make proper use of no ops.
But they're giving us sneak peaks, so who are we to complain?

Thanks. Not being American I wasn't sure if I'd missed something in your justice system.
Civility on Slashdot. Whatever is the world coming to?
Is there a difference between the DOJ and the USDJ? Or is there just a lack of editing?

But it's still Slashdot, yes?
No no no, didn't you get the memo? We shoot them in the face!
Wow, do you work for apple tech support too?
