Ubuntu is ready for the desktop - it is just a matter of getting there like windows does - preinstalled. btw I had to help many a friend upgrade windows from 95 to 98 to whatever but now with ubuntu I won't have to - I can walk them through it over the phone or just send them and email on how to do it. no more install cds for me. but that just may be me.

I wish Microsoft would just shut up and start producing something that is credible - the only thing their good at is spreading FUD. NDS blows away anything they have and always have and is more rubust and stable and is CROSSPLATFORM (you know - can work on other os's besides your own - just wanted to spell that out for him because I know that is a foreign word to them). The same goes with openldap - and you know what I can have both exist on the network because NDS is standards compliant. Not like the crap he and microsoft produces. Also if it is another box that I have to do maintenance on the microsoft way then forget it. I hope this is just for paying for the fiber and signal coming and then I can do what want with it from there. But probably not - microsoft will somehow try to lock me into one of their crappy products just to watch tv.

I couldn't agree with you more. we are becoming more of the mindset - this is how the computer does it for you - than what can I make the computer do. bought my daughter a second hand imac but she hardly uses it because she would rather put her ideas and drawings on paper. And I say good for her - let the ideas flow - who care if it is on the computer on the driveway with chalk or just paper - just start creating and use that brainpower. I refuse to let her use a windows machine. To me they just don't make sense - hit start to logout for example. I have no windows machine in my life and I love it - my work bought one (because that is the standard) that is basically a paperweight on my desk because I don't use it - but our desktop support sure uses it a lot - like doing updates - virus scans etc. - it gets used more for that than actual work - I use my mac and linux machines to do actual work.

I switched to debian/ubuntu - it is just as stable if not more and gives me a lot more software. I always said redhat had the best hardware detection but ubuntu has caught up fast and is just as good in my book. yes the installer isn't pretty and graphical but I only have to do it once and it is very stable and it works. probably wouldn't of switched if redhat didn't triple their prices. but I still like them and wish them well - I really want to see them do great along with debian and all the other distros. I think there is room for them all because they can interoperate together because they all use open standards i.e cups. This says a lot - a lot of microsofts own products can say that. I just hope people realize this and stop the desktop craziness that microsoft has us in.
