I personally would use it on daily out-and-about walking or whatever--going to pick something up from the store or mall? Bring it with, look at it periodically. I probably wouldn't have anything I could connect on me, but in the future I would know if so-and-so cafe or whatever was a "hotspot".

Totally off topic...but I keep seeing people bitching to thin air...whine whine whine...it's an advertisement!...whine, moan, gripe...Slashdot is selling out! ::flails, flops, moans, gripes some more::

Lots of cool geeky stuff is physical. And lots of it is located in America, and other capitolist (sp) countries. So yes, the people who make the things Slashdot links to would love any extra money that may be generated by the exposure. But that doesn't mean Slashdot is only and always out for mysterious advertising revenue these big (or small) mean corporations might be handing them under the table unknown by us poor peon Slashdot readers. Or something. Geez. The laser is cool. And someone is selling it. So what? Doesn't make it less cool.

I'm all for a good conspiracy theory story, I like all that fiction and SFF stuff myself, but there aren't always monsters under the bed.

All these jaded, modded-up gripes about "this is only an ad, not a story!" and "you guys suck, this isn't real news" is making me jaded to the jaded.

Yeah, life isn't a bowl of cherries, but it's not always a hellhole either. /end my own whine, whine, gripe, moan, flail

Craigslist has ultimately been a pretty spectacular failure.

I have found a spectacular apartment with a super-cool landlady, in a NICE Chicago suburb, which I have rented for more than a year now, and a nice flexable part time evening job with a good boss through craigslist. I have also gotten rid of a car that was dragging me and my finances into the gutter.

Sure, you have to watch out for yourself, but there ARE good people beyond the loonies. Just like real life. :) Use a bit of common horse sense, and think twice before thinking it's too good to be true, and it should be ok.

Also, the housing forums have helpful people who are more than happy to tell you about the state of housing in their city, if you're moving away from your hometown.

Sign me up for thse precanned ones too. And add "learn how to brake...just because your car can brake from 60 to 0 in 2 seconds doesn't mean everyone behind you has just got new brakes too!" for those morons who brake hard out of friggin' nowhere for no reason except to feel a few gees as they brake.

Oh, and add "you got a headlight out" and "dude, this is a 4 way stop sign corner, and it's YOUR TURN." and "Watch out...biker on probably the worst road for biking ahead!" (I'm a biker myself, and there's just some roads you don't bike on due to a lack of shoulder and heavy/fast traffic volume.)

I've wanted a "reverse honk" for a while to get rid of the tailgaters (and it's not like I'm a slowpoke myself...if they tailgate me there's something wrong with them because I'm going as fast as I can without getting an insta-ticket the next squad car I pass). Maybe this will serve the purpose? Without having to rig something weird hanging out of your car's rear end?

Focus on the results? Goals? Things you can DO with computer knowledge? The reason I'm somewhat knowledgeable about computers is because I wanted social power online...so I found a way to make me a mod, and then an admin, and then I got sucked into building online communities for things I was a fan of, and this meant I had to learn HTML, webdesign, ftp, servers, chmod (for the message boards), how to read a bit of perl and php, how to install pre-made mods/hacks for message boards, etc. Now I'm a happy little tyrant over a userbase of 100 regulars and semi/seasonal regulars. Oh, I learned marketing too, how to get the people to visit my site. And I'm trying to save the funds to build my own computer (one I'm on now is pre-made sony vaio). Power is always attractive. ;)

Reminds me of Anne McCaffrey's Tower & Hive/Pegasus sci-fi series. In "1997", about when the book "To Ride Pegasus" was set, science "discovered" the EEG could pick up specific variations in brain waves of psychics "using their power", thus proving that psychics did exist. As this was a novel, obviously that didn't happen, but the parallels are interesting.

Well, the Cars trailer ran in front of a superhero movie...and superheros are normally urban phenomenom. When's the last time you ran into a rural superhero? Granted, I'm not a rabid comics fan but I can't think of one. Nothing to save in the country but cows and corn. And then they jump a trailer/story with a redneck/hick truck on the people watching an urban-set action story. That's not to say the movie Cars won't be good...just that perhaps the market and/or context it was shown in wasn't the right one? I could be wrong. It's just a thought though.
