Is the Gates Foundation, which provides software to need schools, etc., buys primarily Miscrosoft products (about 90% of their software budget) and always pays list price. There's a nice built in profit margin for Microsoft!
Thank you. If you believe (as I do) that we're created in God's image, then of course we have the ability to understand the world around us! It's one of the miracles of existance that God gave us such a wonderfully complex universe to understand.
And let the moterators doing the job. My dirty little secret? I read most of the articles Beatles Beatles gets posted because they interest me. Which means the editors are doing a good job, and so is the submitter. However, I rarely read the comments after the submission, even though I'd like to. Why? Because most of the freaking comments are complaints about the submitter!
Geeze people could we have some reasonable discussion? I've never clicked on the submitter's link, and half the time I submit a story I don't bother to include a link because there's nothing interesting I want to highlight. But let the good stories be published - I enjoy reading them.
I feel this is rather obligatory, but... Have you ever read Passage by Connie Willis? The whole boks is about near death experiences and what the images seen really mean. Okay, it's fiction but it's interesting fiction, and it makes you think....
Trucks and SUVs became popular thanks to the CAFE standards, which practicly made station wagons illegal. People still wanted the cargo and passenger capacity of wagons so SUVs were created. Since they qualify as light trucks, the relevant CAFE standards don't apply.
Now on an interesting note, every time the CAFE standards go up the number of highway deaths go up too.
I don't know. I'm on my second contract with the U.S. Army and both times we were Linux based.... The army is cheap. THey'd much rather have an inexpensive open source solution than an expensive custom one.
Last project I was on we had a GIS guy - needed him badly too. So after 6 months when he wanted a 50% raise, he got it. The rest of us? After a year and a promotion it took pulling teeth to get 5%.
As far as govt work is concerned it's a catch 22. No one will hire you w/o clearance and the only way to get one is to be employed by a contractor. So the same community of SCI clearanced contractors rotates through the pool of jobs. It's almost impossible to find an employer who will keep you on for the 6-18 months it takes to get clearance depending on the level.
Depends on the company/project. Twice now I've been hired for government jobs without a security clearance and then had the company get me one (first job I left before the clearance came through, so I'm having to do it all over again.) The problem is it takes about 14 months to get a bloody clearance which means you need a paitent company or a project that is going secret but isn't there yet. Usually newly awarded contracts fit that bill.
Process. A lot of companies are going with some sort of process certification. If you have some sort of experience in process (even if it's just following the damn thing and not complaining too much), it'll help. Having dealt with too many people violently opposed to process, I've gotten in the habit of checking out a candidate's process experience before hiring them.
Not just that, but they hire defense contracting companies that require people to be US citizens and get a security clearance. And the defense contrators do pay comparable wages. And there's some great growth potential, at least at my company (I've been on two projects and you can quickly move up if you want to).
Well, if we're talking "reality" here, then you're pretending to be female and she's pretending to be male.... Between the two of you is an almost normal relationship!
Bless you for that wisdom. After 15 years of rebelling against being female, I'm finally coming to embrace my differences from men. And you know what? It doesn't make me any less of a good programmer.
How about the the TV report about flooding from the reporter in the kyak? If I remember correctly she was in about 2 inches of water... Non disasters don't get viewers, so everything has to be hyped up for the coverage.
We should put the media up for an award for their Katrina coverage. The Cat 4 huricane that was really a cat 3, the higher percentage of white people (over general population) who died versus black, the lack of mass murders in the shelters.... I could go on and on.
Neither did I. Maybe that I wasn't wanted because I'm loud and obnoxious, but never because I'm female. Once I was discriminated against because I wasn't jewish, but again, never because I was female.
Hey, I like programming and I'm female! And I'm damned good at it!!! But, I have to agree with you. With one other exception, all the women programmers I know aren't enjoying themselves.
I must agree with you. The best thing most of us can contribute to the future of humanity is our children. You spend 40 years in a career and what do you get? Retirement, but all your products don't matter anymore. Raise a great kid, and they will affect far more people that anything you built will.
I was working in tech support (ugh) once when I got this call from a guy who spent 40 minutes explaining his problem - trying to fax with a non-fax modem. When I explained why it wouldn't work his comment was "I waste my time talking to a woman!" and hung up. I'm sure his kids are interested in IT.
I rarely notice when they try to hit on me! I am oblivious to most of the subtle attemps. I worked at a company for 3 years and on the day I left one of the guys asked why I'd always blown him off - I never noticed there was anything to blow off! Oops....
They already do this - or at least, some of them do. The elevators in my building alert you before the actual arival.
Which is why I never visit my family for too long.

Oh man, talk about a painful read! I don't think they could dole out enough points for Anna Karenina - I know, I read it!

So don't worry, it's a dry cold?

They're still fake. Women on the internet are faking it as men.

They do? I'm oblivious..... I never noticed! Or I'm hideously ugly. Nah, can't be that!
