No ones saying it's impossible to get malicious code on an iOS device, simply that it's very resistant to it. How can you deny that? Any malicious code that manages to get onto the app store (the first hurdle), then only lasts for as long as it isn't noticed (2nd), and has extremely restricted permissions (3rd). Compare that to Windows, for example, where none of those hurdles exist. It's ridiculous to argue that iOS isn't less susceptible to malware.
It only takes being discovered once to have it removed from the app store, and hence not reasonably installable. Imagine how many pieces of malware would exist on Windows if MS actively and persistently vetted all software... It would probably tend towards zero.
So for all of those great features that you think the Osborne had over the iPad, what would you actually have *used* it for? Checking Facebook? Writing emails? Watching tv? Reading a book? It strikes me that this is what all the iPad haters seem to miss: it's fantastic to actually *use*. The Osborne, with that tiny monitor and pitiful hardware, would be virtually useless by today's standards... And yet you would rather have it. Normal people would rather have the iPad.
Exactly what I was thinking. Microsoft wouldnt much like if their call centers in India suddenly had to pay their employees five times more. Of course laws like this would make prices go throu the roof... I really don't see how you could pick and choose the laws you expect companies to enforce overseas. The state and feelings about copyright in the USA are becoming grossly ridiculous.
Homosexuality is a preference like heterosexuality is a preference. If you think you could choose to change your sexual preference, then I suppose it's fair to expect the same of others.
A complete non-story. Basically it says the iPad2 is much better, but we really really want to make it look like there is competition (to drive hits to our ads of course). The Xoom costs more too.
As far as I can tell, every other tablet manufacturer is a generation behind, more expensive, built cheaper, and has worse software/support than the iPads. I think it will take a few years for the field to balance out.
Yes, that is why my wife just gave our daughter her iBook from 2003, still in perfect working order. I don't know about you, but my non-apple laptops from 2003 have held up much better. Wait...
I'll tell you this, I have used Linux since 1998 and windows since it first came out, and dos before that. I work in IT and use these computers every day. I've used lots and lots of laptops. I have lots of laptops, netbooks and desktops at home in all sorts of varieties. And yet, when i go home, it's the iPad i pick up to use, sitting on the comfy couch, to do absolutely everything i need to do with my home computer. You do the math.
I live in Canada, and I've travelled extensively throughout much of Europe and Asia, and you are simply deluded. On average the Americans I've met, whether in the US or internationally, are far more oblivious of both the world at large and their immediate surroundings. Not just ignorance, but a lack of awareness, insight and understanding. Don't get me wrong, Americans are usually very nice, polite people otherwise.
Furthermore, in my experience the biggest thing people want of America[ns] is for it[them] to go away, not come and rescue them from themselves or whatever you think Americans do on the world stage.
As an American who gets hulu.com, and all the listed shows, you obviously have never been in the position ths parent is experiencing. Hulu.com is not available in most countries. Nor is there any realistic way to get access to it, via proxies or otherwise.
On a side note, its attitudes like this that make people think Americans are oblivious of the rest of the world.
10 hr days is a break? I wish I owned your company... The employees working for free putting money in my pocket! I can't imagine why you'd do that, but hey you're making someone rich.
Communism isn't the only alternative to capitalism. In fact, capitalism isn't a single beast but a slough of different ideologies and practices. Personally i think the major problem is the size of modern corporations. Our corporate and political environment favors large corporations, so the market tends towards ever larger and larger mega multi national corps. Unfortunately those corps are really the worst offenders, and the most resilient to market forces, meaning they don't give a shit about you or what you do.
What we need is to limit corporation sizes, keeping them small in size and breaking them up when they get too big. Keep everything else the same, and simply introduce legislation to limit corporation size, and i think a lot of the current problems will sort themselves out.
The lowest model iPad is 16gb, and the 16gb 3G model is the same price as the tab. Considering that the tab has half the screen real-estate and a thicker body, I'm not sure paying the same price is really much of a bargain...
Unfortunately your opinion doesn't matter to them. You cant hassle them and throw them in jail. You can't give them a ticket for whatever you feel like. You can't beat them senseless and claim they were resisting arrest. they don't give a shit if you think they are liars and should be fired. And they most certainly wont be fired because you think they should be.
The imbalance of power and lack of checks is sickening.
You're being an idealist. Everything is not black and white, good or bad. I know you really don't want to see it, but apple's lockdown is a part of what makes their products good. Mac OS X *is* more locked down than Linux or windows, or had you forgotten? And iOS is better than Mac OS X, at least for most everyday purposes. Sure it's not the only thing that makes the platform great, but it is an integral part. In a perfect world... Sure maybe we wouldn't need DRM or lockdown. Let me know when you find the rabbit hole leading to one.
Yes i will defend DRM and lockdown, when it brings a product that is, IMHO, far superior to anything else on the market. Apple has brought some of the most innovative, useable products to the computing stage that have ever existed. I firmly believe that the iOS products would not be as good if you simply let users click a button or whatever to turn off the control apple has over the platform.
Yes you have to pay the $99 developer fee, but the rest is nonsense. Have you even looked at the iPhone business options, or are you simply spreading FUD?
If the option exists, then eventually most people will be exposed to an app they really want but requires them to click that button and turn off the safety of the app store. I think it's fine to force people to jailbreak to get that kind if freedom on this kind of platform.
Apple doesn't have this same restriction. I can easily build my own app and load it on my own phone (or companies phones) without going through the app store for iPhone.
LMAO Is this why so many people on here think the iPad is crap? If software isn't important, then why do you care what you use at all? Windows ME should be good enough.
Anyways, the truth about the iPad hardware is that it is practically invisible, weighing very little and being almost entirely behind the screen, and very thin to boot. It's pretty good too, at least for me... Last night i was playing Rage, and was impressed. The only thing I wish it had is a camera.
I wouldn't be able to do that in one minute. Thankfully, all I needed to do was click the iBooks app, sign in, and click on a book and I was reading it.

Perhaps not every OS... The much maligned iOS would seem to be a model which is very hardy to trojans.
I was in future shop and they did exactly that to me. I walked out.
Everyone is bad mouthing Bose, but they have damn good sound at a mid range price. All my friends love my little Bose system in my kitchen.

Is anti-apple zealotry to the point of outright refuting facts and supplanting them with fantasy?

All I know is that every Christmas when she comes by I do a complete format on that machine to refresh it for another year for her.
I shuddered reading this, as I remembered what its like to use windows. Bleh!
