Can someone explain how this will not cripple offshoring of outsourced jobs to any country that doesn't recognize the US network? If China has a seperate network, can a software company still send work to its offices there? Can they communicate besides telephone?
You weren't writing flame-bait. You were writing the truth. China, and other non-democracies, needs to be kept as far away from the internet's controls as possible. As for India, the current system seems to be working pretty well for them. This is simply about bureaucratic ego from some other countries.
There is nothing wrong with making as much money as you can as long as you don't break any laws. Google, Wal-Mart and many other "mega-corporations" are good for our economy.
This system also means that a talented researcher can go start a company, develop an innovative product(s) and then sell the company. The entrepreneur should make far more money this way than working as a researcher their whole life.
Capitalism works!
The UN is bad. The UN has stopped as many genocides as ICANN. If anything should be scrapped and started over it is the UN, not the internet, as some posters have suggested. If you disagree with me, ask yourself, "what works better, the internet or the UN?"
I like your post but I would like to point out one important distinction. Each state under the Confederation believed in democracy (even if it was limited to white males who owned property). Many, if not a majority, of the members of the UN are not democracies. Too many of them are terrorist states. This is not a small distinction.
I agree with you point that this was the most interesting part of the interview. I think the interviewer tried to nail him down but he said that he hadn't really thought about it. That part bothered me, this is critical for his business strategy and he hasn't thought of it?
Slashdotters, given Google's track record in developing innovative products, maybe we should give them the benefit of the doubt for at least a little while. They have been out hiring the smartest people in the country (besides me). They might know what they are doing. Let's take a deep breath and see what our new Google overlord's have decided will be our future.

Why don't we celebrate Microsoft's birthday on Slashdot? I'm new here, am I trolling, flame baiting or being funny?

Keep the Chinese away from the milkshakes!
