Because this is corporate america. You dont talk to your kids, you pay people to do it for you. Kids are a status symbol. Ever read Farenheight 451? You know the book? Parent-kid relationships are moving more and more to that end of the spectrum.
My parents were actively involved in each of their children's lives. We all came out pretty good, and very diverse. A Gnostic Chef, Anarchist Environmentalist, and Christian Geek. You dont have to control your kids, just instill good morals and they will take care of themselves, no Big Brother necessary. But you have to be involved none of this hands off Post-Modern parenting crap.
I am not a big fan of running monitoring software on the PC, you can always get around those. You are on the right track with a logger. Go for something like censornet or any of the plethora of network traffic monitoring tools out there. Really hard to get around your gateway. You can run most these tools on a crappy old PC you have lying around the house.
Yes I am looking at an 8/2 Cable line the cost around $500 a month where I am at, then upgrade to a beefier line as need arises. bandwith wise I have noticed that our current remote sites barely use a T1 as the shared drives are local to each network. Heck you can drop a Terrastation at a site and run full backups on weekends. As you know the expensive part is buying 15 servers and keeping them all up. If I could buy one large server and keep it at a central location it would cut costs dramatically for the client and myself. Not to mention solving hardware headaches. I have run test simulations, That is the beauty of vm servers, just as you said you can create wonderful network simulations. My question just was regarding if anyone had actually put the idea into a working environment with Xen or VMware server. How did it work out? What caviats were there? What kind of things do you see in the real world that you wouldnt see in person.
If this setup were to work well for me in a medium sized business. There is no reason it shouldnt work for a guy who manages small business networks. He could happily sit at home doing tech support over the phone and troubleshooting any Server issues without ever having to put pants on.
Sorry, let me be a bit more specific. I would like to create a WAN where all clients use a VPN to connect to a Virtual Server. This Server would use Server 2003 and Exchange to manage their Active directory and mail. Advantages are obvious, I am wanting to know if anyone has tried this setup (managing multiple domains through a VPN with a virtual server).
Technically this works, but I have yet to see examples of a working environment. Which means either no one has done it yet, it is not feasable at this point, or no one has felt like documenting it.
All of my experiences with wirtual server has been with a high speed LAN and single domain. Some people have mentioned things such as being aware of shadow copy capabilities of the host OS. I have no experience with XEN or accessing a virtual machine over a WAN.
Ive run VMWare on multiple platforms and have never had a single issue.. Ok one or two but they were my own fault. Support forums out there are nice and I havent ever had to explain to someone how to set it up beyond the initial "Go to this URL". If you have given up on understanding VMWare I would suggest staying away from other technologies such as OpenOffice, any version of Linux, and for that matter I would just box up your PC and ship it back. Make sure you dont use any sharp objects either....
Does anyone have any experience in virtualization technology in a WAN? Linux hosts vs MS hosts.
I have been researching the feasability of operating a WAN with multiple domains. Each domain to be hosted as a Virtual server in a central location where the client LAN's are connected via VPN. I have researched a bit of Xen, MS Virtual Server, and VMware. Currently vmware server is leading but as slashdotters we are all tinkerers. I am wondering who out there has tried this setup with vmware or Xen and their thoughts.
Did you even read my post? Or were you just looking for an opportunity to vent?
The Wii was meant for whole family entertainment. Nintendo realized it was getting destroyed in the console market so it went a different route. XBox and the PS3 are far superior in many ways. But for me personally the wii fits like a glove, at least on paper.
But there is nothing inherently casual about the Wii.
But to back up what I say about how casual the Wii is:
We were incredibly conscious of where Wii would be placed within the home when we designed it. I hope that you make it the focal point of your living room and enjoy it with the whole family. -interview with Takamoto from the wii website
he fanboyism of Nintendo and Apple has to be beaten down. If Apple or Nintendo took over the market, they would be just like MS and Sony. Yet you would blindly follow them down that road. Be happy that there is competition. If there wasn't, I doubt Nintendo would have been forced to innovate. We would still be playing non-epic games on cartridge media.
This comment is made in its various forms on slashdot, you think you are unique in saying this?
Slashdotters have always rooted for the underdog, always will, people love cinerella stories. Live with it or go live in seclusion.
I am all about the casual gaming, and the wii fits right into my mindset. Something that I can pick up, burn a hour or so and get back to work. Or something my wife can get into as well (hard to phrase that without inviting a lot of sex jokes).
But all in all, I see PS3 and XBox as teen status symbols and hard core gamer items. The People who do use the xbox and PS3 use it so much it is no fun to play with them unless you can keep up with the hours they put in. Dont want any part of that, waste enough of my life as it is on games.
The wii on the other hand is going to fit quite nicely into my entertainment center. From the games I see, I would have no problem inviting my friends in picking up a game of golf.
Seriously? Wow, i mean just wow. Either you are considerably shortsighted, young, or just plain dumb.
Core 2 Duo? Look at those of us who use VMware, any sort of video rendering, or multi-tasking on a general level and we kill those processors in a heartbeat.
Ok time for my fav story, luckily enough this predates my position here.
Once upon a time there was a wiring closet, very very messy, token ring. Among the wiring was a single plastic spoon. This spoon was taped to a cable coming out of the rack. New network supervisor inqueried about it, the tech at the time claimed that it was necessary to keep the network up. Network admin dismissed the idea and began to remove the spoon, soon enough the admin sees lights flash like crazy and the network drops.....
I am not so worried about a Theocracy in general, as I am a Theocracy where one Church/Synagogue/Temple is in control. Then we start the witch hunts where the holy book gets abused for power sake, much as the constitution is abused today. But we then start to see people divinely inspired to die to serve their lord. This is where theocracy is fitting into the picture here I think. The saying, the ends justify the means, tends to be a theocratic idea but not exclusively. Check extreme left environmentalists here.
Also the tendancy for the public to need a scapegoat is frightening as well. Right now it is the neocons, it used to be the communists, before that the natzis, before that...you can go on and on until you go back to first century rome where you get back to Christians. Then it goes back to the Jews and so on. Just pick your gov't and there somewhere will be a scapegoat.
salary jobs are much different than pay by the hour. I guarantee the sys admins who work privately charge at least $100 an hour. You have to remember at a business with regular hours they are paying for benefits on top of that guaranteed $30 an hour. You however have to pay your own benefits and do not get the luxury of 8 hours a day paid.
Ive been doing after hours support for 7 years or so. Just never felt the need to jump to full time. But parent makes great points. I have not done any serious advertizing, just word of mouth. If you treat each of your customers well they will take care of you, I guarantee.
Right now I have an even amount of business and pick up 2 new customers every other month. Which gives me a base of about 50-60 people I regularly service. This keeps me as busy as I want to be. But I would give one extra tidbit of information in addition to the advice above. Take time for youself, this is very important. Take a day and make sure it is the day you have no appointments. Play games, learn guitar, pet a dog. You need a day off here and there and with 2 jobs it is easy to burn out and your customers will notice.
Lastly, Tool Wise I would stick with the basics, I have a laptop backpack (my wife calls it the Geekpack) that I keep a well functioning wireless laptop in with Netstumbler, Ethereal, and Restorer2K. Hardware wise, phillips head screwdriver, cheap fluke, 25' Cat 5 cable, and a couple of my favorite CDs, WINXPHOME SP2, Essential patches, the usual things you dont want to download. I also would get the largest USB key you can afford. I have a 2GB from tigerdirect for $54.
Business wise I am a fool, but SCORE.org has some good resources for learning the trade from experienced individuals.
Because obviously if something is a dumb move it must be due to those ignorant God fearing individuals. Be your religion, Buddism, Islam, Christianity, or Judaism.
This is slashdot, anything short of Athiesm is consiered ignorant, facist and the source of all of today's problems.
while I agree with your post 100% I gotta say you are fighting a losing battle. Trying to educate bigots regarding GM crops is next to impossible once they are against it. But bravo anyway for a great reply.
"Everyone over 28"
also I am just about 28, do I fit in the demographic? I like to think of myself as more a bridge beween two generations as us kids born in 77-79 seem to be stuck in-between worlds.
Hey thanks for the honesty. That was what I was trying to get at with the wisdom vs intelligence thing. That is not an age thing, for instance I have more experience (Technology wise) than many of my co-workers in their 40s. So when I see a problem I see different ramifications, follow the line of thinking and the number of holes I had to dig myself out of in the past then make a judgement based on what I have experienced and what I learned through the last 10 years in IT. However, while my co-workers are hard workers, they do not use the resources available to them to better their knowledge of the subject. In their 20s they were secretaries, HR people, analysts and such. SO they have a decent amount of wisdom in relational ability and work ethic but know only what their boot camp told them about e-mail or programming.
That being said, I know plenty of people my age who think because they have a degree, cert, or whatever that they deserve to be in the best positions, they dont have to earn it because they dont know what it means to earn anything. Personally I take the guy with 15 years of experience under his belt, over a fully certified person any day.
Both generations have the same knowledge at their fingertips, do they both take advantage of it? Statistically people over 50 use it far less. What if you were a bright young kid who kept learning through the years, take the kid with the encyclopedia. We will call him Kid A, then his buddy down the street Kid B spends his time playing video games. Both progress though life, Kid A with his higher education, Kid B probably gets a trade school education. Both kids have equal experience in their field but I bet that Kid A makes it farther than kid B (Social networking aside).
Allot has to be said about how you use information, and just because you have it at your fingertips doesnt mean you are using it. If these kids today, especially the bright ones, can have access to all the information they want. They will be incredibly useful to me when I get older.
I think many people would say we need to move faster. The young mind should be free to learn and absorb at the rate it needs. I for one welcome the explosion of information, I think in the past it hasnt been accessable enough to the young mind. And of course it is up to the parent to moderate what kinds of information the child gets, as each family has separate belief systems. But all in all the young mind will soak up things quickly, give it to them. When I was younger I was fortunate enough to have an encyclopedia. Now everyone has one at their fingertips. You can get answers quickly now rather than waiting for the bi-weekly trip to the library.
Second, just because a child doesnt experience "Your" childhood, doesnt mean that they are not a child. Play may be different now, it is always changing. Just because a child now at age 7 has the knowledge of a 15 year old isnt a bad thing. We are starting to see people in their 20s, and even in their teens with more knowledge than people in their 50-90s. This, I think, is a good trend. The accellerated intellect will allow us to advance our civilization quicker and better than ever in history. Just check out the last 50 years, even the last 15. It is quite impressive. However it is causing a lot of stife in workplaces and life in general as we have intellect vs wisdom everywhere. Give it another 30 years and we will see an amazing culture as long as we dont stifle it.
Help! Help! I'm being destroyed! Again, it's the destructive personalities that cause the damage, not the drugs. time for a biology lesson. And I will use wikipedia for my sources since this is a geek site. I am sure you are aware of the effects but I shall post them anyway. I would really recommend reading the toxicology sections.
Marijuana - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marijuana#List_of_eff ects
Now I understand there are a lot of Myths about the mental effects of these drugs and this can be debated forever on end as it is just philosophy. But the biological effects are not debatable. Drugs such as caffine and Marijuana may not cause as much physical damage but meth, pcp, and cocaine will kill easily and make you enjoy it. But the cold hard truth of it is, there is a reason these chemicals are controlled. Now we could debate forever on whether or not the world would be a better place if drugs were not restricted, trust me that debate will never end.
However it breaks down to this difference between us. You are most likely a person who thinks that humans will regulate themselves just fine, our actions will not effect each other, each life is a closed system. I am of the mind that humans will destroy themselves given any chance, and that one person's fault can destroy civilizations.
amen, mod poster up.

mispoke again "inperson" = in a test environment.

As for the UBCD, I love it but sometimes it doesnt work properly, cant figure out why, usually decide it is the faulty PC I am working on's fault.
