However, when you are talking about companies that sell or service Open Source software, then I would say no...it is not recession-proof. Economics are economics, and money is the same everywhere. Where there is a crunch, money doesn't flow as freely, and both Open Source and proprietary models will suffer.

Now...had they have said "Is FREE software recession-proof" then I would say, "yes...it is."

  6. Trade shows in general are in decline on CES Scales Up While Companies Push Back · · Score: 3, Interesting

I have seen overall trade show decline in the past four years from both a vendor and attendee perspective. Why? As a vendor, it wasn't a great use of our marketing dollars to drop anywhere from $90K to $150K for a large booth, sponsorship and otherwise, for a show that didn't deliver when it came to converted opportunities. In the late 90's, we'd drop nearly $250K for a show, but as things went on, we noticed that all vendors appeared to scale back...except for Novell...they make Linux World with all the floor space they take up and all the swag they give out.

What I did notice though, and this holds especially true for the Linux World Show in San Francisco (specifically) is an increase of C-level executives attending.

If you can code, you've impressed me because you have done something that I would like to do. You can critique your own work, and that is fine, but I think it goes without saying that people are going to do their best to write quality code, and if you've done your best, then be proud of it.

    Just my non-coding two cents.

I think Sun should buy Apple and rename themselves as Apple. Then Mac OS X gets a much better kernel, and Sun gets all of Apple's nice unix userspace (Solaris 10's userspace is awful). Mac OS X server becomes Solaris 11 and all of apple's good ideas like OpenDirectory, their management GUIs for open source apps, etc become a part of solaris. Already technology transfer is happening. My local Apple rep said a lot of core technologies are being licensed from Sun including ZFS. If Apple's Mac OS X is such a superior kernel, why isn't it everywhere already? I regularly work with Fortune 50 customers or better, and I have yet to see a Mac server anywhere in the environment. I'm not trying to discredit you or your posting. UAE is hardly perfect, but the US, UK and everyhwhere else has its issues as well. I just don't think I'd rely on Solidaritycenter.org for accurate information. Again, I think I would talk to those that do business there, and look at more than a source that is known for leaning toward the left when it comes to labor laws. Heck, they don't like our (the US) labor laws.

Last I checked, nobody made people apply for our visa programs, and nobody made the people who choose to go to the UAE apply for that program either. This whole thing reminds me of the Spanish speakers here in the US that tell me I need to learn Spanish. Last I checked, I live in America and English is still the national language.

People make their own choices, and I stand by my original statement...UAE is a decent place. If it were not, there would not be hoards of tourists flocking there and Expats everywhere you look. They must be doing something right.

If you're in the oil business with 90% of your work in the middle east, go to Dubai. I see nothing wrong with this, especially if they say they are going to pay US taxes and remain a US corp.
