If people are waiting til 2006 anyways, Gates would have been smarter to delay Longhorn until WinFS could be totally implemented. If they need more money coming in on the conveyor belt, then they could have just released Windows XP OSR2 - essentially a service pack/ upgraded version people would have to pay for. I seriously doubt I will be paying for a cippled version of Longhorn - especially if its best parts are going to be made available for XP.
Looks like maybe MS should have spent a little more time getting WinFS working instead of tweaking the UI to make it "oh so pretty." Unfortunately, I think MS realizes that a slick (albeit graphics intensive) UI will likely sell more copies to the ignorant masses than an innovation like WinFS.
Yes, but such was also the plan for the 600, I had heard somewhere. It will be interesting to see if they learned from their blunder. As you see from the article, the specs on the camera are all conjecture at this point so who knows what will happen.
Agreed, but just because you and I understand this notion dows not mean that Joe Consumer that wants a cool new Treo will. People want what they pay for in most cases. If the "NC" model was the same price, that would just open the door to a competitor.
Lowering teh price would result in less overall revenue, since I doubt $50 off will make a noticable impact on sales (i.e. most people who won't pay $450 for the Treo won't pay $400 either.)
Sure, it might not make THAT much of a difference, but it will likely appease the countless amounts of people that would say "Why should I pay just as much for one without a camera?" Also, I would have to believe that a 1.3 MP camera is no longer a negligable cost.
Yes, but the Tungsten W is thicker, and less sexy than the Treo. Also, the Tungsten does not have a built in earpiece and mic, but rather forces you to use the hands free kit. This makes the phone features seem like an afterthought.
Yeah they do, but it also took a few months of corporate types complaining before they implemented it. Hopefully they won't make the same mistake 2x...
Nope, no cameras at all. Cell phone has a camera? Leave it in the car. PDA has a camera? Leave it at home. Makes buying gadgets tough because cameras cost basically nothing to put in these things now. I would consider where I work high-security, but not top-level. I do not need security clearance, but key-card entrance, etc. is in place.
Finally, a high-res color screen. This will make wireless web surfing bearable. On a low-res screen it was basically worthless.
However, the inclusion of a camera continues to be a deterrant to some corporate customers. No matter how much I like this, I cannot have a camera or photo equipment in my office, so I could never get one. I'd imagine in this age of security, I am not the only one. I guess we'll have to wait for the non-cam model just like they did with the 600. Why don't they have a Treo 650-NC for ~$50 cheaper right off the bat?
Could it be that the vast majoirty of people are getting smarter with PCs and therefore less people are calling in? And those that do call in are either computer illiterate or have a *serious* problem? I know as time goes on, my parents and relatives just ask me for help now instead of calling a helpdesk. I guess it end up being a case of what came first, the chicken or the egg.
So the 35-year-old computer programmer from Ottawa, Ontario, wrote a piece of software that let him record the show directly onto his PC hard drive while he snoozed
Just like a legal timer record function on a VCR. How in the hell are the lawyers expecting to beat that precedent?
Hahah your programming experience is surely more extensive than mine. My "expertise" consists of having done small Java programs in college, along with a good deal of VHDL and Verilog. I will take your word for it.:)
From the article:
For its next generation chips, Intel said it incorporated new materials and other technologies to work around the problems.
Wow, what a helpful and descriptive statement. The quality of this article is disgusting. Why even post it?
Can anyone explain exactly what will be in Longhorn, now that the new filesystem and graphics system is not going to be in it ?
Bugs.

Hate to say it, but the link you got it from is wrong. Try this one http://www.mobiledia.com/phones/handspring/treo-30 0.html
It is 160x160. Trust me, I had it, and now I have the Tungsten E and the Treo is a lot worse.
Wrong. Treo 300 had a low-res screen - just like the 600. I had the 300 before I got rid of it. It was a piece of shit really.

Dude, I already downloaded SP2. I'm invincible now. Looks like this guy was just a little late with the book!

I agree, I think its silly. No cameras, but we have a copy machine and pockets. Just a lower-tech version of the same threat isnt it?

what it is like to track down and fix a bug
:)
Track a bug? Sounds like trying to follow a single mosquito in the ranforest.
Did you see the show about him on VH1? CREEPY stuff...
True, so this now begs the question: is support getting worse, or are users getting dumber? I'd venture to say both...bad combo.
I was being optimistic, I know...[sigh]
Dude, fucking excellent post. :) You beat me to the punch with that joke. I wish I had some mod points...

EXCELLENT point. I, for one, take the latter.
Nevermind, just RTFA... :-/
