  1. I grew up with on When Should Children Be Introduced to Computers? · · Score: 1

computers. There has been a computer in my house as long as I can remember. The difference between myself and my peers that did not grow up with computers is night and day. I was born in 78 and my age group is part of the group where few grew up with computers as compared with teens now who all grew up with computers. I consider myself fortunate to have had a head start and would not be where I am today without that head start. Technology changes rapidly, if you are not there to keep up it is hard to jump in and understand the current technology and keep up with the rapid succession of changes.

My point is that you can't honestly think that kids don't do bad things of their own free thought or free will. I wasn't criticizing grammar or spelling since /. comments are informal anyway and nobody cares about correct grammar or occasional misspellings except the flamebait.

"the kids won't vandalize on their own so there must be a reason!" You don't honestly believe that do you? You never did anything bad as a kid? And when did, it was someone elses idea? And to top it off you didn't have a mind to decide for yourself whether or not to do it? You better believe kids vandalize on their own. It's assinine to think otherwise, it's like saying kids aren't capable of thought!

  4. Taking responsibility for our actions on GTA Blamed for Graffiti · · Score: 5, Insightful

Why do people think they can blame their actions on somthing or someone else? The only thing that made those kids pick up a can of spray paint are their own minds. Even a 12 year old knows graffiti is vandalism and they know it's wrong. Society needs to stop allowing people to scapegoat their actions. We are responsible for the things we do. Were these kids going to jack cars and run people over, maybe grab a flame thrower and torch cars and then get away with it by blaming GTA. Nobody is responsible for their actions anymore, aw jeez McDees made me fat, Smith and Wesson shot my face off while I was cleaning my loaded gun and Jack Daniels made me beat my wife.

Of course you could always write to a computer corporation. Cisco runs the "Cisco Acad" at my college. The networking courses are no longer taught with an in house curriculum. In exchange wwe seem to get a pretty decent price cut on the cost of the dozens of routers and switches we have from Cisco. Although it's one more way for your school to be branded. Good luck.

That is exactly what happened with HalfLife 2. There is no manual that came with it. Just a card for the main keys and 5 CDs in envelopes.

One more thing to add to the list, what is up with game CDs comming in envelopes now? WTF? I fork out an average of $59 per game and they take away the cases and replace them with cheap assed envelopes. I can appreciate that they were cheaping out on boxes because smaller boxes are much better than those old skool monstrosities but the new cost cutting measure just pisses me off.

  8. Difficulty signing "Joes" on for Firefox on Firefox New York Times Ad Hits the Presses · · Score: 1

At 1 point or another I have worked on the computer of nearly every person I know, removing viri, malware, or upgrading optimizing their pc. For more than a year I have added Firefox (with permission) and I hear the same complaints, inspite of the benefits of Firefox, the moduals are too complicated for the average user, they get frustrated with it's out of the box limitations and give up. I keep trying to convert people but unless they have some computer savy most of the "Joes" give it up and return to IE. On a side note, my college finally added Firefox to the image so we now have a choice.

  10. Re:How to use on Windows Incident Forensics with Knoppix Helix · · Score: 1

When it's running through linux, it uses it's own static command moduals, this is to prevent system calls. One other thing Helix does, or I should say doesn't do is touch files, it grabs information such as MAC times and inode info without compromising the file integrity. Helix keeps a log and will give you a report of activity. It doesn't install anything either. Should be safe for what you want. I hope this answers your question. One annoying problem is that if you don't turn off the auto run for your ROM it launches a menu on its own, if you close the menu it will eject the disk.

I'm currently enrolled in my final year of an intense computer forensics course, funny the topic of Helix should come up. Our program received a donation of a few dozen copies of Helix customized for us. We've been using it and studying it for a couple weeks now. It's a great tool and includes some networking tools as well. Really I can't say enough about Helix.

It's not the fact that it's cool to own, it's the idea that there are people out there who would spend the time to answer the challenge. What one constructs does not necessarily need purpose, or be cool all that matters is this guy did something that many can't, for lack of knowledge or technical skill. Simply he did it because he can. Many inventions came from tinkering, better use of a product came from modding or hacking. This guys owns a portable PS2 before the portable PS2 came on the market.
