Not to mention shit like a rear facing camera(the front one makes sense for video conferencing and whatnot). It's all the power of a cellphone camera thats bigger than most commercial SLRs(at least in terms of area)! It's the worst of both worlds! And of course, adds cost to the device. I really don't think Samsung knew where they were going with this one and used the old, "lets throw every hardware feature on this thing under the sun to beat Apple!" approach which has been tried many times before, and failed many times before. Maybe they will succeed, but just the fact that they put a back facing camera in a tablet makes me doubt it.(And yes I'm sure you can think of a couple of obscure uses for the thing, but 99% of the time I bet people won't even bother with it.)

  4. Re:Software is only part of the equation on Facebook Competitor Diaspora Revealed · · Score: 1

But bittorrent and social networks are VERY different beasts. With bittorrent the amount of data that has to be centrally managed is minimal, your ip and what parts of the file you have. If a peer/seeder disappears in the bittorrent world it doesn't really affect the download(unless that person was the only seeder of course) since everyone is essentially sharing the same, unencrypted data.

Now look at it from a social network point of view. You have to join and filter massive amounts of data that may or may not exist(at least in an unencrypted form) on a server that is currently available. The data may not be replicated on a server that is anywhere near you, or one connected to a really slow pipe. The only way you can really get the information distributed is if you share it unencrypted, and by then you have pretty much defeated the entire purpose of the software. It's an interesting concept for sure, but I doubt it will turn into anything that even remotely threatens facebook.

If this really wants to be a "competitor" to facebook they are going to need a lot more than just software. Of course they need users, but they also need a central organization and a LOT of servers. Facebook is more than just a software interface, they have a massive # of globally distributed data centers that cost a ton of money. I doubt any one organization is going to put the same amount of resources behind this project. More than likely, if this amounts to anything it won't be a facebook competitor but instead a platform for much smaller communities to use. TFA even mentions this(but its not in the summary. Of course being open source it is theoretically possible then to "transfer" your profile among communities, but that remains to be seen.

  8. Again paranoia rules the roost on Police Publish 'An Introduction To PEDO BEAR' · · Score: 5, Insightful

This constant paranoia over pedophilia has gotten insane. While it is a terrible crime, the odds of your kid getting killed by an SUV dwarf the odds that they will get molested by a stranger(some studies suggest that the child knows the perpetrator about 90% of the time). Meanwhile fearful parents park their kids in front of some sort of glowing rectangle and let them eat themselves to an early grave because a guaranteed life of obesity seems somehow better than a slim(really slim if your properly educate and observe the children) chance that they will be molested.

Furthermore the whole police state mentality is driving people who have these urges further and further underground. Dan Savage had a really interesting call on his podcast a few months back about someone who said he couldn't control his attraction to children. He hadn't molested anyone yet but he was scared he might, but thanks to the way the law is written now, if he seeks help the psychiatrist MUST report him to the cops where he will be thrown in prison and then booted out into a world where he is a pariah just for THOUGHTS he may have had. So instead of this man being able to seek professional help(which could include chemical castration), he is now forced to battle his demons on his own and is probably MORE likely to molest a kid than if he had been able to get help. But somehow Americans think that if they can use the police to arrest someone, they should no matter what the actual or perceived crime is.

Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not trying to minimize molestation, it's a real and terrible thing. But being irrationally afraid of the problem isn't going to make it go away and really isn't going to leave your children in a very healthy state when they grow up.

Enforcing rules such as this are always a joke. What ends up happening is that the state ends up hiring a whole bunch of cops who do nothing all day but roam around the area going to various stores and trying to get the overworked clerk to sell them one of these games. And if the clerk gets caught the corporations usually end up not having to pay a dime(thats why they hire lobbyists), it's the poor overworked kid who made an honest mistake while performing a job that is a lot more stressful than most people realize. So now instead of paying for school he winds up having to pay a huge fine, may have his name printed in the paper etc. And yet pretty much any kid that wants these games will still be able to get their hands on them.

Ugh, Americans really need to give up this law and order fantasy where they think they can modify people's behavior just by creating laws(attn pro-lifers and anti-drug crusaders, this means you)
