    Except...to my mind the  writing is on the wall that we will start doing this shit before we properly understand it.  This could result in the rich damaging their children beyond repair.

    For example, the whole "alcoholism gene" concept.  Sounds like a great idea to get rid of that!  Except that personally, the large majority of the smartest people I've ever met have been prone to alcoholism.  I kinda think that shows a correct understanding of the human situation, needing a drink, but that's a whole nother discussion :-)

    I do feel pretty sure there will be some lovely disasters in the first thirty-fifty years we start doing this.

    Are you certain?  Certain enough to talk it down?

    It has made some impact in the blood diamond trade, and while diamonds are not "fungible", as you say, they certainly have no inherent value.  Metals can often be traced back to their source as well.

    When it comes to trying to stop the enslavement of child soldiers in shithole third world countries, a real certification program could definitely make a difference, even if it's not perfect.

    Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

    There are plenty of real evils to fight without making up fictional ones.

    I am so impressed.

    Who knows?  Maybe one day they'll let me download files to the directory of my choice.  Or move updates to a more convenient time than *when I want to use my web browser* on open.

    This is merely a great reason not to buy a tablet unless you can root it.

    If you can't have root, you can't have ultimate control (of the software, at least), and then you have to smash it into a thousand pieces if it gets hacked.

    And by "root" I mean "bootloader level control".  Actually a little more than root.

    This is why I've only bought Google Android phones, for example.

    You have never worked with business grade tape.  It is way more reliable than HDD.

    And it can be put in a safe deposit box.

    Give it time.  I don't think it can be stopped, in the end.  Only slowed down.

    Extrapolate the amount of "online-ness" in the world from 2000 to today to twenty years from now and I think you'll see what I mean.

    Android is taking over the world, already.

    I predict by 2020 we will all be using Linux desktops, quite possible of Android geneology.

    I've been predicting this for years, but it's nice to know the name of the distro, finally :-)
