    Exactly; if you want ad agencies to "get your message", try to actually block the ads you find annoying instead of blocking _all_ ads... if flash/dhtml ads get less and less views compared to "normal" banners, they will get the message...

    Linux has more drivers out of the box then Windows does.

    That might be, but how many of those drivers are actually useful to the average computer owner? In my experience, when buying new hardware, it usually isn't supported by Linux and is by Windows... for example, I bought two new computers last christmas - both really new hardware... guess what ? No linux support, only FreeBSD and Windows (ofcourse) supported it...

    So next time you make those kind of claims, please consider that the amount of drivers Linux has usually isn't interresting to the average computer owner... they really don't care about that obscure ISA card or that weird serial modem... they want the latest bluetooth, usb 2.0, tv-in and webcam to work on their new SATA2-enabled motherboard....

    If I owned some giant company needing hundreds of terabytes of storage, I'd use these as economical backup storage. If you're storing terabytes, you can afford to throw away a few 750 dollar drives.

    I don't think the warez kiddo's are that wealthy... :-)

    No, they paid for the networks, the customers paid them... if the customers don't feel like they get the speed they think their money is worth, a competitor will step up and the customers will go there...

    Exactly... especially with things like these, it's usually best for the entire internet if you just stick with the defaults... they are defaults for a reason, it might not be the best for you, but it's most likely the best for the internet as a whole.

    Reminds me of those people tweaking firefox settings to hammer all kind of webservers... sure, your browsing might be a slight bit faster, at the expense of the browsing of lots of other people...

    Yes. As soon as you start digging into more advanced topics, books can really help. When you're doing things like PHP, which is practiced by lots (millions?) of people out there, I personally feel that a book can be handy for people that want one central place of a lot of information, but not necessary to learn to master the language properly...

    As a matter of fact, these types of mobiles with TV on them are already quite popular over here (in .nl) and I must say, for things like the news and such, it works pretty well... good sound, a good quality video stream and well, yeah, the screen might be a bit tiny but you sure as hell can see what's going on (a friend of mine owns such a mobile)...

    The only bad side about this is the cost - it's simply not worth the money (yet) to watch the news over your mobile. You can just as well call your auntie, ask what was on the news, ask her how she's doing, have a good discussion and then hangup and you'll still be off cheaper than watching the news for a few minutes...

    The more a piece of software is being used, the more prestige for the developers who worked on it... so in the end, it's probably good for the developer's ego, which makes them do more (or attract more developers)...

    Then why don't you read the paper, referred to from the article?

    There probably are a hell lot of people like me out there; I personally have a lot of difficulties reading pure-technical texts... my mind gets distracted and I don't remember the things I read. When a text is written a bit more lively way, it helps me stay focussed on the article and everyone's happy...

    Exactly... I've got the feeling that the people who are so much against Beatles-Beatles are bitching just for the bitching... I haven't heard one single argument against Beatles-Beatles actually stating why it harms us so much - sure, he might be getting a pagerank, so what ? Doesn't he deserve to get his pagerank up if the moderator's decide that what he's posting is actually good stuff ?

    I for one enjoy most of the articles this guy posts, so please, quit bitching until you find some argument that goes against the articles he posts, instead of the person Beatles-Beatles himself.

    If you don't know who Stroustrap and K&R are, you have no right commenting on C/C++ issues.

    I'm sorry, I only know Bjarne Stroustrup... who's that Stroustrap you're talking about ? :-)

    And on a more serious note, I think the professor has a valid point... his job is to teach someone C++, and well, like Stroustrup says, goto should only be used in rare cases. At the point that someone reaches this point where he has to perform these kind of optimizations, one can say that he mastered the language enough to be able to properly decide whether or not to use goto. Students, however, shouldn't be taught to be using goto...

    My point is that it's just rediculous to say that Amazon will patent Wiki's after SOOOO many publicity it has received. Sure, Amazon posesses evil patents like the one-click ordering, but suggesting Amazon will patent Wiki's is just a post to get yourself modded up, and I hate that...

    And well, I figured more people would see that it's just a standard reaction to ANY Slashdot post about patents, and merely posted to either get a reaction from other people or just to get himself modded up... anyway, I figured people would respond in the same way as I felt, but guess I was wrong... :-)
