  1. Re:Seems to me they should target Rust Belt/non-me on The Soaring Costs for New Data Center Projects · · Score: 1

One of the benifits of a warehouse for a datacenter is that you can put the large systems in easily. Also backup power, fuel storage etc is not a big problem either. In Mumbai India ICICI Bank converted a cannery into a very large datacenter with all the trimmings. You slashdot people have to really understand the the US is not the center of the world. Just overpriced! I have seen datacenters built in just about any and all locations. At Reliance in Mumbai they built their datacenter in an old building also, they had no idea of what equipment they were going to purchase so the built a generic datacenter that would support any and all types of equipment (Hardware), it was pretty slick. In Manila I have seen Hardware hoisted up elevator shafts 5 or 6 stories trying to make this big iron fit into the datacenter. The best location for datacenters are ones where it is possible to support and install the planned equipment. All the other costs are actually incidental. Walls are easy, networks, AC etc. NO big deal. In Hong Kong I installed a server in an EQINOX datacenter and asked why the water pipes were in the Datacenter, I saw no Gas. They said their standard for fire suppression was Water, I was totally blown away, never saw it. Mitsubisi in Thailand's datacenter is right next to the production line and is filty, failures are constant.

My daughter is 1/2 Native American and a fire breathing Republican, even invited to Bush's 1st Inauguration, go figure... The issues are more that American Democracy requires enemies for it to exist. No enemy, no large military. This has been the case since the 13 Colonies were killing Indians to take over the land, nothing has changed. Just consider why it is necessary to have so many bad people that the American Citizens must be protected against. Your rights don't exist, and America is not Free, I realize it has been said so many times before but living outside of the US in the 3rd world where at time you can actually put your life at risk is an eyeopener. Americans don't have a clue what the realities of the world are and the sad thing is that they don't care.

Tell this to the sweat shops in Phonom Phen that are protesting because of the working conditions to manufacture crap for the US consumer. There is nothing democratic about globalization and working conditions. WTO is another reason to screw the 3rd world with high prices medicines from the US to the point that people cannot afford the costs and die because of the lack of inexpensive alternatives. Good ole American free enterprise...

I believe Apple executive were wandering about in the streets and stepped in the local dog shit. Problem is that it isn't from dogs.... Makes you think twice when you are driving to work and you see the people shitting in the streets and people waking around them. This is also why they eat with their right hands, not their left. Worked at Reliance Infocomm in Mumbai, then move to New Mumbai later. Reliance only used contracted Non-Indian Consultants to build the infrastucture, mostly Americans, Europeans and Australians, although I was leading (an American based in Thailand) a team of Malaysian and Singaporean Chinese to assess the existing Sun Systems and Viability to go to Hard Launch directly to Mukesh Ambani, I reported my findings directly to him. Problem with Indians is they all want to be bosses (all chiefs and no Indians) ;-) so it was very difficult to get things done. While working at Reliance I read in the Mumbai news paper (still have the article) about an discussion between the Pakistani and Indian PM's. The Indian PM said in the article that India would accept 2 Nuclear Hits from Pakistan but then they would destroy Pakistan. So I am wondering why the world seems to want to outsource just about everything to India, if the PM's are talking those terms then it seems likely that Bangalore, Mumbai, Chanai, Dehli are all in harms way. Guess that would solve the outsourcing problems with the US. On a last thought, I now have an IT company here in Thailand and so outsourcing but not with Indians, we use Burmese, Vietnamese, Filipinos, Indionesians, Bangaldeshi's and even Pakastanis because the cost of services is quite expensive in India and even expensive here in Thailand also. Also you have to look at where the Indians are starting to transplant themselves now. It seems that everyone on the internet that is a headhunter for IT services is Indian. Perfect spot to select the people you want for to submit for a position and eliminate the others, sounds a bit parinoid but just an observation. Also its easier to get "Tea Money" for services rendered from thankful Indians that the Locals.

I was thinking the same thing... There are tons of jobs avaiable in India. Wipro want to bring me on board but when they ask if you are an Indian and you say NO, then you never hear from them again. Why shouldn't the US do the same. If your Indian, don't bother to apply. I have worked in India before, PM'ed a couple of projects at Reliance Infocomm in Mumbai/New Mumbai and also at ICICI bank. Cheap doesn't necessarly translate in to quality.

If you partner in the US its cool but if you are dealing in Asia you had better think twice. Sun is not a vendor of choice out here. Sun is full of shit and is throwing products on the market hoping something will stick to the wall, don't get sucked in, no products, no support no nothing.
