I am wondering if google's engineers, being the best in the world knew of this possibility before releasing their software. And if they didnt, should be bring google's engineers a small step down from their pedestal. I am not throwing out any conspiracy theories here but this is just a question to slashdot readers, who assume google can do no wrong. as with any sw development the designers have to know of limitations of the platform they are developing for and work around it...

Superior animals control populations of other animals and sometimes entire populations die creating chain reactions.
Superior animals only CONTROL not eliminate entire populations. Only homo sapiens have the developed the means and stupidity to do this, inspite of knowing that the ecosystem of any region would be imbalanced if a species is lost.
Other than humans only catastrophis natural events and evolution can destroy entire species, which is what I presume happened in N America. The large mammals have been genetically wired now to live in warmer tropical climes than here. So I think this is a bad idea.

It is so sad and unfortunate that these days the words "national security" and "terrorist" are almost guarenteed to get you the results and press coverage you want. You can just accuse someone of being a terrorist or undermining national security and you have half the battle won against that person/entity.

Every time a study comes out saying that Windows is more secure, faster and cheaper than Linux, the first thing Slashdotters ask is "Who funded this study?"
The paper was published in the Nature magazine. It doesnot matter who funded the studies, it has been peer reviewed and the results agreed upon by a majority of the author's peers who know the subject matter best. The day Microsoft comes out with a clear test methodology and peer reviewed comparision analysis, which is not likely, is the day slashdotters would stop asking the question.

Why would anyone buy a coffee maker that broadcasted their coffee preferences to everyone nearby?
Because very soon some genius would come up with a way to switch on ur coffee maker with ur tv remote and ur tv would tell your heater what temperature to set itself to. And then a script kiddie would come along and sniff the traffic... just maybe
