Maybe I'm not thinking in my right mind, but why is it so great?
I have 3Com switches with VLAN configured. Makes sense, you've got 24 ports concentrating down to 1 to go to a switch on the other side of the building. Conceivably, you carve up the switch into 24 VLANs. Nice feature, you can move 24 logical segemnets over 1 Cat5 cable or one pair of fiber.
Now I'm sitting on my linux machine. What uses could I possibly have for VLAN? What's the intended use by packaging VLAN tools with Redhat?
Seriously: what the hell do you want? Even if something newsworthy gets submitted, it won't get posted. Slashdot is a waste of your time today. There will be no real news posted. it's this way every April 1. Just sit back and be ENTERTAINED byt the stupidity of others, that's what I'm doing!
I bought a Dreamcast. I love my Dreamcast. It runs Linux and NetBSD. It plays ogg and MP3. It (poorly) decodes DiVX. It can emulate any game console before it. Oh, and did I mention that it does this all without modding of any kind? That *ANYONE* who can burn a CD can play NES, Atari, SNES, and even PS games on it?
It was worth the $40 I paid for it. Every single penny.
If an Xbox can do the same unmodded, it only opens up that much more. Play PS2 and N64 games? Probably. Play DVDs and DiVX flawlessly? You know it. Use that internel hard drive for storing your library of MP3/oggs and take them with you wherever you go!
When the Xbox is yesterday's game console and you can pick it up at the pawn shop for $50, you'll be happy that it can run linux unmodded.
Now, the real test here would be benchmarking UT or Quake on the Xbox against the Walmart Microtel PC. Everyone's whining about how stupid this is, that you can buy a PC for the price of an Xbox, etc, let's see some numbers. The Microtel stuff isn't designed for gaming, the Xbox is. If I can haul ass on UT on the Xbox, it was worth it.

Sorry, I got in the wrong mind track. Too many "BSD is dying" posts screwed up my already messed up brain.
I did check out that link, thank you. As always, there were plenty of vague sources like PCworld who basically said it was flaws, but wouldn't give any clues as to why.
Reading the first page of links, my assumption is this. You are vulnerable A) if you're not staying on top of new releases or B) you're writing code that's not being sanity checked. I learned PHP by the seat of my pants, and on my very first PHP application I realized that anyone can squeeze data into a PHP script. So, make sure your checking is all done on the PHP script being executed, not on the form being sent. As was pointed out, it's very easy to want to do stuff like www.mysite.com/page.php?page=bio.php. That in itself isn't unsafe, just make sure you're checking the input strings for validity. Of course, using #includes is a much safer way to do it, but to each his own.
Stay patched and learn to code safely. Sounds like any other language I've ever heard of, so why pick on PHP? Compared to other security flaws in a linux system, why do we need to pick on PHP?

A drop in share in one month doesn't conclude to the OS dying. However, you bring up an interetsing point. When Apache loses ground, it never gets posted to Slashdot. When Apache gains, no matter how slight, it does get posted.
I'm all for the promotion of open source, and certainly Apache is a kickass product.
They give the printer away at cost (or less). They then jack you with the cartridges. Even the refillable ones leak, and generic cartridges all suck anyway. The solution? Buy an Apollo printer (HP 648 with a different chassis and different name) for $35. When the ink runs out, throw the whole thing away and buy a new printer.
NT4 and Windows 2000 have compatibility issues. For instance, running a PDC controller on NT4 makes it more compatible with NT, Win9x, 2k, and XP. Running a Win2K PDC cuts off functionality from NT and Win9x clients. So why am I running 9x and NT workstations? Some stuff just won't work on new OS's. We've got servers(!!) running on Windows 3.11 because the software is too b0rked to run on anything newer. And besides, there's nothing more fun than showing off our 486 servers:-).

It sounds too good to be true, it sounds like one of those fly-by-night-in-the-face-of-the-second-law deals
/. team!
If something is too good to be true, check the calendar.
Out of all the stories posted today, this is the only one that actually looks like news. Nice work,
Don't you guys get lake effect snow in Washington after April 1st?
If BSD is dying, they'll only need one grave, right?

that fat kid in school who only knew one joke, and kept repeating it
Hey, that was ME!!!!
qupe!
Shrinter? I believe they exist already. They're called "Lexmarks".
"It is perfectly safe as long as it is not running."
What other kind of Pinto is there?
I have a Sampo for that :-)
It did boast "Instant on" DVD, CD, MP3, and VCD playback as one of the prime features
I have one of those, it's called a DVD player. RCA made them awhile ago.

Did Slashdot just attempt an upgrade to PHP 5?
Dude, I grew up with a Pinto. I remember riding in the hatchback staring up in the sky. When I got my license, I drove that Pinto.
Pintos kick ass, except for that exploding thing.
Simple... use Quicken to its fullest extent, then try using Gnucash. You'll see pretty quickly.
Why not a Ford Pinto?
They explode when they crash....
there are a lot of people who think it's stupid that they don't make planes out of the same stuff as black boxes. I work with some of them.
it'd be too heavy, and it'd never fly.
it's called a loss leader.

UPGRADING ISN'T ALWAYS THE RIGHT ANSWER.
I was in Sprint's store yesterday, and I was shocked to see a new Nokia for sale. Maybe they're finally figuring it out.
Kyocera phones have shitty reception. The Samsung ones seem ok, but just give me my damn Motorola!!!!
