This service exists since 2001 in France, branded under the name of "Yacast" http://yacast.fr/fr/index.html> ("service de pige musicale"). You can get a sms with the complete disc references, a ringtone, or sms news about the band.
Why does Slashdot put this kind of retro newsfor USA but is rejecting geek news from Europe ? (ECS 50th Eurovision)
Sir.
We should apologize about producing proof we cannot present, as they have mysteriously disapeared. All of them.
Please, do not blame us being outrageous at the Court, we can explain that : It's Henry. In 1997, Henry downloaded games and other stuff from the internet. And he gets a virus. This malicious program was downoloaded from a finnish ftp server. This virus prevented us of printing and destroyed all our archives.
We just discovered that.
But we have proof that IBM stolen us the concept : they made an advertising about this sad story.
(sorry, I just madde humor about a old IBM advertiqing, and in French, the name of the falwty employee was Henry).
Perhaps. But if I don't have roaming compliant operator in the planet where I am, how can I use the H2G2 with my i-mode device ?
I think you meant "compact" instead of "mobile", don't I ?
Yes... and in the GSM specification, you should ALWAYS be able to call 112 (European Emergency Number) that is linked to your local EMR.
But the main problem in GSM emergency specification is that by calling any emergency number, you use one channel on the cell you are using and reserving 2 minimum in the neighbour cells.
In case of big catastrophes (like the one in live in Toulouse 21-09-2001), immediatly, all the networks were saturated, even in half-rate... Land-line where also saturated, only specialised international services and ADSL still worked.

TiVo is strictly unknow here in France. But MythTV/FreeVo & co ... users are still numerous (in proportion with the number of home linux users).
