I see what you're saying... I really do. But I really don't see Open Source as a competitor in the marketplace so much as a watchdog for private, for-profit software houses.

Hobbiests (open source) continue to develop software that attempts to nip at the heels of the likes of Microsoft. If FOSS is able to overtake these software packages in terms of overall ease of use and features, then eventually people will choose to switch over. These companies (obviously) don't want that, and it keeps them continually adding, fixing, and changing their own software.

People/companies want the features... but they want to get them from a large corporation (standards, long-term reliability...etc). FOSS keeps the corporations on their toes. ;)

Just like nobody really expects a third party candidate to win... they're just there to push agendas.

  5. Re:Most disturbing..... on Darwin Evolving Into A Tricky Exhibit · · Score: 1

What I fail to understand is why this topic... either way... absolutely MUST be taught to kids who simply don't need to be taught it yet.

The theory of the origin of diversity on this planet (be it Evo or ID) is a somewhat irrelevant part of a child's education before he/she gets to college. It's not as though they teach you much beyond the theory of evolution in high school. Kids don't need to know this in order to take sophomore, junior, or senior courses... It's just some little tidbit (as I remember it was just a chapter that we covered and were tested on... then never saw again). We did quite a bit on genetics and that whole topic, and evolution was just a sideline.

WHY does this topic need to be covered in high school? I aim this at both sides of the debate.

Christians don't want the schools teaching their children that their family tradition is meaningless and stupid.

Scientists and teachers don't want to be forced to present something that doesn't have a place in a science classroom.

This is very easy to solve... just don't teach the topic in high school. Save it for college where it's appropriate... where you can teach theories to people who have a better understanding of what 'theory' means; Where controversy is just par for the course.

I believe that Christians are misguided in insisting that ID be taught in science classrooms... but I think that this particular theory could very easily be avoided until college without lessening the high school education experience.

Everyone SHOULD be happy with this. Except that the evolutionists won't be. "That's preposterous!! I refuse to see the other side of the argument!! I'm right and furthermore everyone should know it!! Kids need to know MY theory RIGHT NOW before they start to believe what their own family wants them to believe!!"

A while back a friend of mine was telling me about a particular purse that she was trying to sell in her store... $10.00 for a rather plain purse... they stayed on the shelves for months. Finally she instructed one of her employees to mark them down to $7.00. Apparently there was a misscommunication and the purses were marked UP to $70.00. They flew off the shelves. She sold em all within 2 weeks. Price playes a HUGE part in public perception of value.

The purpose isn't to train them to all be network admins (just like we don't need 5billion trashmen or CEOs). The purpose is to train them to be comfortable with computers in such a way as is valuble to them in the future.

This is meant to teach them to USE computers to get things done... not to teach them how to do meaningless things that they can then brag about to their friends (I recompiled my kernel today!!! I managed to install the updated driver for my keyboard!!!).

Does a recent version of MS Office run on this distro out of the box? If it dosen't then it's worthless to anyone trying to gain skills that will be useful in an office environment. And no... OO.org dosen't cut it.

I will never understand why so many people are to willing (nay EAGER) to throw away so many hours of their lives to battle with their computers to accomplish tasks which are so trivially easy on the two real OS's (OSX and Windows... not nessicarily in any order).

I'm so glad ALL of the various OS's figured that out a long time ago... it would be rediculous if you still had to access the console and install your various drivers by hand... making sure all of the files are in the right places and such...

Linux has always felt like a house of cards to me. It works wonderfully as long as you don't touch it. But if you pull out one card and the whole thing crumbles. At least with windows I don't worry about it suddenly deciding not to boot every time I hit power.
