  1. lie is such a strong word ... on Robots Learn To Lie · · Score: 5, Insightful

The headline should read that robots have realized a strategic advantage of misleading other robots. The sophistication of such a strategy is amazing when humanized, but not so out of line with simple adaptive game theory. Agents / Bots have been "misleading" for a long time now during prisoners dilemma tournaments and no one seemed concerned.

  2. Are there any opinions about two 30" monitors? on Using Two Monitors Makes You More Productive? · · Score: 1

Reading the threads there has been a lot of, if you can get 2 monitors, it is as productive as a 30" screen. But is there any benefit to two 30" monitors? Does anyone have this setup, was it worth the extra $$$.

Many people think that this madness was over the PS3, but really, this was the only place that you could get the Ricky Bobby movie early. That had to account for at least half the crowd. Right?

  5. Re:The big problem with competition. on Chinese Students' Cheating Techniques - Don't Try at Home · · Score: 1

The problem is a bit more subtle that just competition. The competition for a limited number of spaces leads to what is known as a positional externality. This is a dangerous consequence where it does not matter how well I do, I just have to be better than someone else (or billions of other). We are seeing this academic arms race happening all over the place, even in the US. So what do we do? We recognized it for what it is. This is a place for some truly incredible individuals, but it is not a judgement of the quality of an individual. By placing so much value on a result that is nearly unobtainable is likely to cause suffering in the many people that by the nature of the positional externality - cannot succeed regardless of ability.

While I do enjoy someone writing a think piece on the idea of the dangers of a mono-culture. For anyone that wants to acutally learn more about the application of immunization models to computer security, I suggest you check out her research.

I cannot remmber anticipating E3 ever as much as this year. Sure, last year was the first one that I even noticed, but still. A lot should be revealed in the next week that determines pricing, DVD formats, release dates, strategies, publisher loyalties, etc.

  8. This is a Sad Reality? on Windows Users Ignoring LUA Security · · Score: 1

Like many of the slashdot readers, the last sentence of this post caught my eye: "Most users just don't know they can set up least-privilege accounts in Windows today, and that's just a sad reality."' What a very strange perspective to think of this as a sad reality. For two reason really. First, for someone to be distraught that someone feels this is what is wrong in the world of administration, computer security, or the world as a whole is a bit distorted. The second reason I found this strange is that the fault lies with the user and other administrators for not know this aspect of a software package. Seems that there is a problem with disseminating the information, or as many previous readers have mentioned, there is a problem with the functionality itself. "Sad reality" - no so much. Overlooked tidbit, maybe. Another action item for microsofts training center - most likely.

  9. Re:Dreamcast on Xbox 2 to Release in Fall of This Year · · Score: 1

If anyone remembers Neo-Geo, the other big flaw with their strategy was the out of this world cost for each and every game. I do not remember specifics, but it was up in the $200 range for a game. The large price tag might not be suicide - but rather targeting a completely different market. One that a video game system has never tarteged before. That of a the new young shopper that is buying the system as the corner-stone to their entertainment center. Purchase power and disposable income have never been higher for parts of the teenage demographic. A while back, I heard there would be DVDR included as well as Tivo, internet acess and probably more when released.
