  7. congrats on Wikipedia Hits Million-Entry Mark · · Score: 1

    Congratulations to Wikipedia! :) But I would (I do) focus more on quality rather than quantity. I would also focus more on the quality of the software used. I also start two wikis right now by using MediaWiki, which although needs lots of tuning and fixing (it seems Monobook is the only supported stylesheet) has shown its ability to handle with satisfactory success a big site. I plan to build my own software, but for now mediawiki does the job well. I would also strive to enable a more distributed wiki. One thing I don't like about Wikipedia is their inclusion of non-GFDL images. It is not a pure GNU resource as long as it allows "fair use" images. But aside these issues, Wikipedia is a good and useful resource, and it shows that small motivated teams of free individuals can achieve much better results than profit-driven MegaCorps (TM) with managers and CEOs :) I think this is the most important achievement of Wikipedia. Slackware is a great distribution and very well-suited for custom servers and *nix fans. I have purchased Slackware CDs and have a machine in my home with Slackware 10.0. I have also met people running their small business only with Slackware. It is also a great distribution for experimentation and for learning the inner workings of GNU/Linux.

  10. Firefox rant on Mozilla's Goodger on Firefox's Future · · Score: 1
    Begin:Rant {

    Firefox has too few features when compared to Mozilla, Opera or Konqueror (my favourite). Although better than MSIE, Firefox developers should think again whether the path they walk will allow them to maintain a strong share and reputation in the browser market.

    Users now switch to Firefox because they want to escape from MSIE. That's great, and I truly believe that very soon Firefox will be used by at least 50% of the web users, including companies, and later its market share may be even higher, assuming that MS will not unveil any fixed or usable MSIE version in the near future.

    However, in the long run, users will notice the lack of features in Firefox and start going back to featurefull browsers like Mozilla, Opera and Konqueror. I do believe, however, that Firefox will continue being used by corporations exactly because it is very light without many features.

    It is worth noting that a Firefox developer wanted to remove the "View Source" menu option from CVS. But the HTML source is useful to anyone, not just developers.

    Firefox developers should not expect that the user will install tweaks and addons. Firefox right now has a powerful engine but only a small portion of this power is available to the end user. Users will soon demand more power.

    It is also very annoying to have to install a number of addons and tweaks in order to make Firefox work unveiling its full power. Now consider how many users will have the patience to reinstall addons and tweaks after a HDD format or a Windows reinstallation... They will not accept that hassle so they will soon move to the powerful Mozilla or another alternative such as Opera or Konqueror (for KDE users).

  14. Berne Convention applies on Does Shareware X-Chat for Windows Violate the GPL? · · Score: 1

    The Berne Convention applies in this case. The Convention states that the copyright with all rights reserved is assigned by default to the original creator of a creative work. If some people contributed code to X-Chat without stating terms, they have the default copyright. Because of the act of contributing to a GPL project (You cannot combine GPLed with non-GPLed code), it is understood that they agreed to release their code under GPL or a GPL-compatible license, which is one of the two possible ways to have their code included in the project. The second way is to release their code in the public domain, but it would be wrong and risky to make such an assumption. So, Zed should remove all code written by other people or ask all of them for permission if he intends to release X-Chat under a license incompatible with GPL. I am not a lawyer (IANAL).
