Well your PS/2 is only going to lock up daily if you do to it, what you've done to your Tivo. I'm guessing you've done something to your Tivo, because, out of the box, It doesn't lock up.
I'll give ya the 'slow' bit, but buggy, and crash prone. NO.
How are you defining these terms? I've had my Tivo (Sony stand alone) for a year now. Never had a crash or any 'bugs'. Including after going in an adding additional storage. And from talking to the other people I know that have Tivo's and have done the same, I'd have to say you are more than a little off-base.
The bulk number of people that have no clue how a computer works, let alone the people who can't even make windows work, will grossly prohibit the 'common man' from ever straying from the main stream. (ie. Microsoft).
That doesn't make it right, but then again it rarely does.
You have already decided that it is a good buy at $300. It going to play any number of formats that you recognize. And then theirs the added bonus of the video games.
This device was not made for Joe 'Normal' Consumer. It was made for people that see that it's not just another DVD player.
What about the movie Total Recall. It was one giant ad!

Good rule of thumb might be....If it plugs in, it's not a good present.
This would include, but not limited to, Washers/Dryers, Kitchen appliances, & Entertainment equipment.
No matter how bad she wants/needs these things, they aren't considered gift items.
I've seen her wrestle, but I've never seen her box.
