Just attend a Microsoft conference or something. They pretty much shower you in free software. I have gotten 3 copies of Windows XP, a copy of Windows 2003 Enterprise, 2 Copies of VS.net, and a couple of copies of office.

Could you not just cut a hole in the SVHS tape rather than mess up a perfectly good DVHS recorder?

Could you not just place an infrared filter in front of the lense? It seems that would take care of trying to blind the CCD with large amounts of infrared light.
