I don't understand why this guy can't be called on his actions! And why you think I can't respond. Maybe if mean people are told that they are mean, they will soon stop being mean. It's not stooping to his level and it's not harassment, it's explaining in very simple terms that he is an ASS and has no right to humiliate another human being in public. Start calling people on their ignorance and let's make this a better world to live in. Send him an email, call him, call his office, send a reply! He publically humiliated an employee if his. And he's making money paid for by my hard-earned dollars! That also gives us the right to speak up.

If you want a good description of what Superstrings is all about, read Brian Greene's book "The Elegant Universe". It's about superstrings, hidden dimensions, and the quest for the ultimate theory. His book was also made into a PBS special a few months ago. Brian Greene is a master at making these complex issues understandable. And he's fun to watch too. I'm not sure how much pure research he does anymore, but he's probably one of the best things that's ever happened to science because he helps people like me understand what people like him do - and tells us why we should care!

  3. MS Windows Updates... on 2004 Global Information Security Survey Results · · Score: 2, Interesting
At our company we finally implemented a process where MS updates could be applied more quickly. Because MS is famous for messing up everyone's machine with their lovely windows updates, we had an almost 2 month testing cycle before updates were applied. Now we apply security patches immediately (i.e., within 1-2 days - workstations first, then servers). We'll deal with any MS screw-ups the next day.

"2. Separate information security from IT" - idiots! It's IT that understands this stuff. The answer is not to separate the security group from IT, the answer is to give IT the authority to make the tough lock-down decisions required to make the systems secure and force the business area to adhere to those guidelines. Users want to download everything, keep the same password for x years, or paste the password on their monitor - just in case they forget. The key is give IT the authority to lock-down users and prevent them from doing stupid things. Also, continually educate users on why security is so important. If your users take security seriously, the whole system flows better.

One final thought, why can't all passwords expire at the same time - and all contain the same restrictions? If a number is required in a password, and mixed case - then require that for all passwords so I can use the same one across the systems (mainframe, windows login, peoplesoft login). I'll still change them every 6-8 weeks, but make them all expire at the same time - much appreciated! :)

Excellent job - congrats! We especially like the plug-ins updates! This feature works great.

This issue concerns me - maybe because I have young kids and am no longer certain what field I should tell them to go into. Computer science like your parents? Forget it - the US outsources the low-level jobs so you can no longer get experience. And to get the good jobs, you need experience. Doesn't anyone see the problem here? An interesting article in InfoWorld about China's institute founded by Microsoft - and the 3-D technology being developed. http://www.infoworld.com/article/04/09/03/36OPedit or_1.html

We're falling behind - how many of you work with teachers wannabe highly paid IT people! There's something fundamentally wrong with our industry and these articles should be a wake up call. Where do I get these research jobs - where are the Microsoft institutes for research in the US?

I agree they're tough to reach. The point is that I don't need to call Microsoft technical support for most issues because I have 10 people around me to ask - who all understand Microsoft server setups. Including fairly good online, integrated help. Please don't misunderstand, I want off Microsoft as quickly as possible - I just need to get over the Linux learning curve, and hopefully pull a few friends across with me so I don't go this alone. It's encouraging to see Linux start to explode in the server market so I have more resources to help me out!

This is the part about Linux that scares me. I'm a Microsoft developer that's looking to make the leap to Linux, but it just seems so overwhelming and confusing. I can tell my boss that Linux is more secure, free from viruses, yadah yadah. But if the sys admin doesn't know all the bizzillion pieces to put together - and not many vendors support Linux yet, then are we really better off in the Linux world? At least with Microsoft I have someone to "blame" when things go wrong and it doesn't all come clammering down on my head. I'm learning though - slowly. There is good documentation out there, it just all seems very overwhelming right now! Linux needs to become easier - dumbed-down, yes! Please! It's not childish, it's required.
