No, the situation we are in is the result of a House and Senate with a 90%+ re-election rate despite a 13% approval rating.
The message sent by this is that congressmen can do whatever they like, as they're going to get re-elected no matter how much they work against the public's interests..
I think you draw an incomplete conclusion there. The conclusion I draw is that individual votes do no matter. Either "they" have found some to influence voters to vote against the voter's own interests or "they" have found a way to rig the election system. Either way, your vote and my vote do not matter. Masses of idiots or fraud allows the people at the top get to do whatever they want regardless of anyone's desires.
Every dictator in recent memory was a product of the CIA/NSA's attempts to secure the low price of oil.
You are really batting a a thousand today aren't you? You have no knowledge of the history of the Middle East. Just be silent to prevent yourself from looking even more foolish and knee-jerk than you already do:
I could go on and on showing you how the USA has only recently been a major player in the regional politics that are fucking up the Middle East. Remember, the Middle East is the birthplace of civilization. The very first organized war ever was fought near the current Iraq border with Syria. You really need to educate yourself before you go all aggro on the USA about current transgressions. Yes, such transgressions should be called out. No, you should not lose all sense of perspective. It is irrational and childish.
No we're not. No war was ever declared and the majority of our troops have left. At best our troops are in an advisory role now.
We still have troops there and they are in a dangerous situation.
but what we really end up doing is victimizing those very citizens.
Hardly. This information is not used for petty crime detection like it is in the USA.
I wont even bother with "if it's legal"... our government clearly doesn't care...
It is legal. There are no laws which prevent it. Cite the law that prevents the NSA from collecting data on a foreign country and we can talk again.
but it's immoral, unjust and completely ineffectual.
Immoral? Describe how. Unjust? Describe how. Completely ineffectual? Hardly. They find all sorts of groups planting IEDs and plotting mayhem.
Despite having every phone in the country tapped it took us how long to catch Bin Laden?
LOL. Really? Bin Laden was in Pakistan, not Afghanistan. That does not matter anyways since the NSA likely has all of Pakistan bugged too... but Bin Laden was an educated professional. He was extremely disciplined in the areas of SIGINT and TEMPEST. Of course he would not be caught by eavesdropping electronically.
Look, I agree that the NSA should not be spying on Americans. There is a very serious law that prohibits that; however, there are no laws which prohibit the Chinese, the Russians, the Israelis, or the French from spying on Americans. It is hardly reasonable to say that the Israelis spying on Americans is immoral, unjust, and ineffective; therefore, why would you say it about Americans in Afghanistan?
If google and facebook could find qualified black (or American employees in general) employees, wouldn't they do that rather than importing people from India/Pakistan/$wherever?
To paraphrase Peter Griffin: The only color that matters is green.
From personal experience, drinking while programming isn't so bad, although the increasing mental and physical clumsiness will eventually become a problem. Smoking weed while programming, on the other hand, is asking for trouble.
There are numerous people who have the EXACT opposite experience. That is part of what makes the world so marvelous: We are all different.:)
The government back in the 90s decided their brilliant fire policies could be even more brilliant. Instead of letting small fires burn (some seeds and bugs only grow/hatch after a fire), but no no no, people in universities and in Washington, these intellectuals, were smarter than nature or those western ranching folks with no college degree.
Your dates are wrong. I did volunteer work with the Forestry Service in New Mexico in the early 80s. The rangers explained to us why we were doing what we were doing and how it helped the forest. We created fire breaks that would allow fires to burn without growing uncontrollably even back then. The rangers did mention a time when the policy was to put out all fires no matter how small but I do not recall them saying when exactly that policy was reversed.
In short, your information is correct but your dates are off by at least a decade.
Now show that to your mother and ask her if this is the correct site to reset her bank of America password. Next try and explain to her why, and then come back and tell us how hard it is to grasp.
I do not understand your point. Are you saying that since his mother can not understand how to decode a URL that purports to reset her password, that nobody else should be given a chance to? So all we get is a link that says Bank Password Reset with no chance at all to decode if it is a hostile URL?
People are assholes or not. Some of those assholes use religion to justify their behavior. Some use other means.
If you are enslaving people, you are probably wrong. If you are killing people, you are probably wrong. If you are censoring ideas, you are probably wrong. None of these are absolutes; otherwise, how could you kill someone to stop them from murdering a dozen other people?
Long story short, your actions determine whether or not you are an asshole. Your justifications do not determine whether or not you are an asshole; although, they might relieve you of the judgement of your peers.
or mass-production of parts from fibre reinforced plastic.
All of these are nerdier, but perhaps not as easily digested.
Yeah. I would not like to meet the person who can digest fibre reinforced plastic... I have a hard enough time with burritos with jalapeno peppers and hot sauce!
I am extremely suspicious of so many folks with 3 digit IDs coming out strongly in favor of the inevitability of systemd.
I strongly dislike systemd and Pottering and I am shocked that Linux is evolving in this way. It seems like a concerted and coordinated effort. It seems like someone is driving a poison dagger deep into the heart of Linux.
I would be interested in hearing why exactly you are in favor of giving up the *nix way? Is "one or two levels above" really worth it when it costs so much more?
I saw all of the Star Trek movies by Abrams and I honestly can not remember the plot line of any of them. There was nothing objectionable about them, I guess they were okay movies; they had decent effects and scenes... but I can not remember what they were about.
I think of them like candy (not chocolate). Utterly devoid of any nutrition but they taste pretty good. I would rather have a nice steak.
I can recite the plots of all of the non-Abrams Star Trek movies, even the bad ones. I wonder why...
Yet not one "feature" gives me what I really want, the ability to leave my UI the same while upgrading all the "under the hood features" and security fixes.
That is because you are an ignorant slob who wouldn't know good design if it bit you in the ass. You should be thankful that someone educated in the arts and in usability is improving your interface for you. Who wants to use those crappy, non-artistic interfaces that were "designed" by unenlightened engineers from days long forgotten?
Essentially, if you object to the interface, you are just an old fashioned luddite who is incapable of adapting to the modern world.
(this is the way "they" appear to think. not the way that i think)
My main issue with eating meat is that I do not like taking/ending the consciousness from a living thing. That being said, I will eat meat. I eat quite a bit of it actually.
I do not trust large corporations to not poison me while making fake meat. They were willing to kill their own babies in China just to pocket a little extra money (look up melamine). I am sure they (not just Chinese) would have no hesitation at all about poisoning adults too.
Link to your project page please? Obviously, searching for Omni alone will not return what I want. Omni Cyanogen seems to be returning some results. I will eventually find your project but a link would be nicer.:)
As flawed as we are, it's probably a good thing that we won't survive long enough to leave our solar system and populate the cosmos. We don't deserve it. We're just too *dumb* as a species.
As flawed as single celled organisms are, it's probably good that they will not survive long enough to leave our solar system and populate the cosmos...
Evolution is still happening. The "we" that you are postulating will not exist in a thousand years. If we were to separate 2 groups of humans for a thousand years, it is possible that they would be totally separate species if there were sufficient evolutionary pressure.
In other words, kill yourself* to improve the species if you think the current state of the human species is so terrible.
*not saying that to be a dick, just pointing out that is how evolution happens: death of the organism, growth of the new slightly different organism.
My Macbook Pro is from mid 2010. I stopped "upgrading" at Snow Leopard because that is when OS X went off the deep end. Snow Leopard itself actually annoys me with the "integrated app store" bullshit. I wanted a Unix based laptop with a semi-reasonable GUI and all I would have if I upgraded to the latest is an ugly IOS device doing everything it can to get me to buy shit.
If someone will do the job for $X and not leave for greener pastures then $X is what they're "worth".
Keep on thinking that and see what happens. There may be a reason the person is not leaving such as there being nowhere else to leave to! But keep on paying shit salaries and see what kind of shit work you get.
These hours have been intentionally redacted by large multinational corporations so as to create a permanent underclass of part time workers that is forced to take on two or three jobs in order to create a normal work week capable of sustaining basic rent and food.
And it shows that YOU are out of touch as well... but at least you appear to care. The long and short of it is that they CAN'T work 3 jobs because each 20 hour employer varies the schedule wildly from week to week in an attempt to keep the 20 hour employee from working any other jobs.
Why does an employer care if you have another job outside of your 20 hours? I would assume it is to ensure that your other commitments do not interfere with the job they hired you for. I really do not know... but it is absolutely fucking evil. Either pay enough for a person to live or schedule them reliably so they can work another job too.
It only takes 6 pussies to kill one hero and there are millions of pussies.
It is rare indeed when you find someone who is willing to die for what they believe in. Most people just want to live their lives and will tolerate quite a bit before they will accept any risk.

Oh right, it has to hurt. May as well use the guillotine.

Firefox was created to make the Mozilla browser lean and mean. I seem to recall downloads smaller than 5 megabytes for it.
Now? Just wow. It is a huge, bloated, monstrosity of crap. Again.
Time for a new Firefox.

I think they attributed it to Max Planck or someone.
While nobody wants to die, it is good that everyone does die eventually. I don't want to die!

OS X only got faster with each release. I am not sure where that came to an end, but the last few release have been steadily slowing down my MacBook.
Snow Leopard was the first release that was more bloated and slower than previous releases. Each release after that was incrementally worse.
