I'd warrant (but don't have the statistics to back me up) that the typical ad-block user would be less prone to click on ads if forced to see them than a typical surfer.
The click is golden, but what they REALLY want is to ensure that you are aware of whatever they are advertising. That way, when you next think about such a thing, their product/service/whatever is now an option in your mind. Does it guarantee a sale? No. Does it create more sales than total ignorance of their product/service/whatever? You betcha.
I wonder what effect the bad taste of the popup/ad/whatever has on sales though... hm.
I agree, but there is an ethical discussion to be had.
What the advertisers and websites see is that you and I are blocking their revenue stream.
What I see is that I get to decide what runs on my computer and scripts from unethical actors are a definite no-no for my computer.
The reason I agree with you about the, "gimme a fucking break.", is that the two ethical concerns never really meet. The revenue model is broken. It kind of works now because of Microsoft and ignorance so the advertisers will keep trying to force scripts down our throats. It is, nevertheless, a broken revenue model.
There is no 'but the Democrats...' counterpoint on this...it's ALWAYS REPUBLICANS.
Damn. You forced me to log in. Well, anyways, Republicans might be pushing the creationism thing (it is not just them, but whatever, let's let you have your argument) but there is a Democrat as a president right now and Democrats are obviously not good either. Perhaps in a different way than Republicans, but still they are absolutely terrible.
If you really want what is good for this country, you will reject both parties and the entire current power structure. It is corrupt to the core.
How can we respect the Executive branch when it is blatantly violating the 4th Amendment? How can we respect the Legislative Branch when it is passing laws that are blatantly unconstitutional? They could, in theory, repeal the 4th Amendment and make all of the crazy laws they have passed legal, but they do not. How can we respect the Judicial Branch when they do not judge the laws to be unconstitutional when they clearly are? How are we supposed to respect the rule of law when there is none?
The corruption may indeed be based on good intentions, but it is corruption nevertheless. You believe that the Republicans are so stupid and evil that you should vote for the Democrats. I say you are wrong. You should vote for neither. I am not telling you that you are wrong about the Republicans, I am telling you that you are wrong about the Democrats.
Yeah, I'd have been a lot more impressed if he'd concentrated on code that was closer to right, on examples that were more realistic.
Dude. Why so negative? Relax. He found something that interested him and investigated. That is all. He is not trying to prove anything or change the world. He is just "scratching an itch". That itch is his and his alone. Some other people thought it seemed kind of cool and that kind of snowballed into this article. He does not owe you any awesomeness, so just relax and take it for what it is worth or ignore it.
Did you ever check to see how much Maggie Simpson is worth when she is scanned at the register? This is the same kind of thing.
That is incredibly awesome. Thank you for sharing. I love hearing about weird random things like that. It makes the universe seem less... boring, evil, out-to-get-you, etc. Very very cool.:)
But that statement that "One doesn't even need to be hit by a bullet to be killed by it -..." is so full of crap that it's ludicrous!
For handguns and shoulder fired rifles, what you say is unquestionably true. For crew-served weapons, my understanding is that the bullets create a disturbance in the air around them that can chop off limbs and such. I am ready to be corrected if I am wrong.
No, you don't understand. Amnesty and immigration are needed to keep the social security Ponzi-scheme going. There simply aren't enough young people paying into the system to support all those retired old people.
NO! YOU do not understand. All of those old people have already fully paid up their social security accounts. Early in the 1980s, before I could even vote, I remember some kerfluffle in Congress about all of those billions upon billions of dollars in the Social Security fund just sitting there being unused. Sitting capital should be INVESTED was the cry...
Essentially, the government spent all of the Social Security money and promised to pay it back through taxes. If the burden is too high, too fucking bad. That Social Security was paid for. The government stole it and promised that YOU would pay it back. Either deal with it and pay up or throw a revolution (and discard the old people).
I believe that once machines obviate the need for large human organisations, with their attendant inefficiencies, a form of democratic socialism will become the preferred way to run society.
Once you are unneeded, you will be discarded. Ask almost any old person.:(
The only society that will exist is of those who own the machines and small pool of slaves/servants for things that machines can not ever really do (such as fulfilling some sexual fetishes).
Since people making less than the median typically also make up 50% of the electorate, it looks like these people are voting against their own interests (or do not vote at all).
To me, after many long years of voting, it looks like voting does not matter at all. The system is rigged from top to bottom, a sort of Defense-in-Depth setup. Sure, at each and every point in the voting system, it appears as if your vote could matter, but somewhere else down the line, it is nullified. In the end, it ends up not mattering what you vote for, such as which president you vote for. Everyone who is visible/viable is already fully bought and paid for or the law is already passed behind the scenes. Fait accompli.
Your.sig, "When information is power, privacy is freedom.", may have been posted by anonymous but was created by another Slashdot user. Jan Wryel something or other. I saw it and decided to "steal" it from him and asked him where he got it. He (she?) said he made it out of a combination of some other phrases that were going around. I can look up the exact information if you would like. Just pointing out that it was not Anonymous who created it.
What you just described, was hard work on the part of yourself and your parents.
If it was just hard work, more people would be escaping. It is also luck. There are many people who work very hard but still end up where they started or worse.
When you encounter a reasonably good-looking (by your standards) woman with a similar professional background, is your thought process about her professional work (e.g. language or OS choices, server configurations, algorithm ideas), or is your thought process about how you might be able to get her into bed?
The world is not so black and white. There are females where I work. As far as the job is concerned, I evaluate them strictly on their knowledge and abilities. As far as their looks are concerned, I evaluate them strictly on their, well, looks.
I am an animal. You can deny that you are an animal and try to get rid of all the animals in the world... but I think you will eventually find yourself very lonely because all of us are animals.
My outwards behaviour is controlled by the thinking part of my brain. My inward behavior is a random mesh of impulses caused by who knows what. Sex drive is certainly a strong one. Internally, all women are evaluated for their potential suitability for the mating process but you seem to imply that this is controllable. It is not. What is controllable is the outward behavior.
I quit smoking not too long ago, I had sweats, irritability, and sleeplessness for ~2 weeks
There are no physical qualities concerning marijuana and/or THC which would cause that. If it did indeed happen, it was purely mental on your part. These symptoms are not frequently noted as being suffered by others who have stopped.
this isn't 1960's pot.
Nice FUD there... which calls into question the veracity of your prior testimony. So people in the 1960s had to smoke more to get the same effect as people today. So what? You do not drink the same amount of hard liquor as you do beer. Why would you smoke the same amount of current strains as you would have with prior strains?
Second issue is that those viewers are not being measured. Broadcast television is seeing it's viewership decline as people go do other things
How are they measuring their viewers if they are broadcasting? They can not. Nielsen ratings? That will capture Aereo. Timeshifting is timeshifting nor matter how it is done.
There are in principle NO advantages to a multiple monitor setup.
I used to think like you do a few years ago, so I bought a nice big hires 30 inch display. OMG was it sweet. Absolutely awesome and to this day, I do not regret the purchase... however, at work, I started using 2 monitors.
Here is what I found: Higher resolutions and larger screens are always nice. Two or more monitors are NOT the same as one monitor even if the one monitor has the same specs as both other monitors combined. Why?
I am unsure. Here is my theory: I suspect that a monitor is a "thought space". What that means is that when switching my view between monitors, I am switching thought processes in my brain. This is radically different than staring at different windows on the same monitor. I am unsure why.
Long story short: Multi-monitor setups have a reason to exist outside of resolution and screen space.
Sophos says that the security updates have stopped for anything older than Mavericks, but the article they link to has updates for 10.7, 10,8, and 10.9 in it that are less than 30 days old.
Odd. I have Snow Leopard and have not received any updates in roughly 2 months now. The only update I keep getting offered is some sort of program that will prepare my system for Mavericks.
at, but ordinary idiots who blink at you with a blank expression when you ask what version of OS X they use.
I am not upgrading from Snow Leopard because I updated my iPad to IOS7 and regret it terribly. It looks like Windows 8. I do not want my Macbook Pro to look like Windows 8, all flat and nasty looking.
I'm not sure where the author gets the idea that Apple has stopped releasing security updates for older systems.
The article is correct. I have a Macbook Pro (5.1) which I run Snow Leopard on. Ever since they advertised a "security update" that prepares my operating system for Mavericks, I have not received any security updates.
To put that more clearly, all security updates for Snow Leopard have stopped. You must change your OS to Mavericks to get security updates.
I will not be changing the operating system on my computer and I will not be buying anymore Macs. Hell, I do not even run Windows anymore. All of the vendors suck hard.
Wow. This comment really threw me for a loop. Very impressive and insightful. You are exactly correct: If the business can invent customers for positive advertising, why can't the public or competitors invent customers for negative advertising?
Hm.
Even weirder, your comment was +4 when I first viewed it but it is now only +3. WTF? Wish I had mod points because I do not really have anything to add and would rather have modded you than replied.
Look man, 11 September 2001 was performed directly as a response to Bill Clinton's cruise missile attack of training camps in Afghanistan in 1998. Bin Laden's response to those attacks (paraphrased) was, "We can not afford 5 million dollar cruise missiles but we can use your airplanes as cruise missiles and attack you like you have attacked us."
Drop the conspiracy shit. There are plenty of conspiracies, such as the conspiracy to hide the fact that Bin Laden ever made such a direct reference to what he was going to do since it demonstrates the incompetence of our leaders to protect us.
The "leadership" of our country (America) is just a bunch of inbred jackasses whose corrupt and nepotistic (is that a word?) practices ruin everything that is great about this nation. If they would screen for competence rather than connections, they might actually have a chance at running the country successfully, but that is as likely as the moon turning blue and flying off towards Sirius the day after tomorrow.
Actually, I would like to add that corruption and nepotism are not unique to American leadership. These are traits that are common amongst ALL of us. (is amongst no longer proper English? Firefox seems to think not.)
Why are there no schools or training which teach us to avoid these common and incredibly stupid issues? Everyone should be taught from birth that choosing someone for a job/duty based on anything other than competence is a recipe for disaster.
I was in San Diego. I had experienced a few earthquakes previously but had felt nothing in advance of them.
One night, I was sitting on my couch and I felt a kind of pressure in my head. Almost sinus like in nature but it felt like it was grabbing my brain. It was not painful, just... odd. So the pressure was building up and I felt a release must be near and then the ground started moving like it was waves on the ocean. It was a relatively mild (5.2r @ 50 miles away?) earthquake but the sensation of the pressure was relieved. It almost felt good and expected.
No, not time travel, but related to your experience with an earthquake. Perhaps you felt "pressure" inside your head too which is why things bent?
Don't forget the part about the Scouring of the Shire where Merry and Pippin realized that they had grown up quite a bit and and were able to deal with things that they had previously thought were big, scary, and beyond their reach. Sam and Frodo realized they had matured and become wiser too. A good experience for children to see.
Perhaps the Norwegians feel it's incredibly stupid to create a culture that creates criminals by promoting wealth inequality.
There is a certain percentage (no idea what the actual percentage is) of people who will be criminals no matter what. Yes, certain aspects of society can push otherwise non-criminal people into criminal behavior, but for the most part, serious crime is performed by criminals who would be criminal no matter the type of society.
What was that saying? Some people just want to watch the world burn.
Stop lumping them all together as one giant boogeyman.
No. Not until they quit their jobs at the NSA. Once they quit, IF they can prove they had no knowledge, I will forgive them. Until then, fuck them ALL.
