True, 10% is still high, but it depends on what population the 10% is coming out of. Hopefully nobody in IT is going to be giving out their passwords. So at least you shouldn't have any admin or poweruser problems. I would also hope that places like the IRS have restricted access from the outside world, which would mean that in order to do much damage, you'd need to be internal, in which case you've got an even bigger problem.
There balance sheet is looking just fine. Yeah, Firefox will take a bite out of them, but the majority of their money is coming from the wireless market not the desktop.
In the first link, you can find a long list of the phones and PDAs they support and they are the default browser on many of them. I don't know about the more than any though.
No, Opera is not open source, but not everything needs to be. If everything was open source, who would employ all those pasty skinned, unshaven developers? Just because something is open source doesn't mean it's great and just because something is a comercial product doesn't mean it sucks.
When I was doing independent contract work, I took a gig where they wanted me to sign that any work I did belonged to them. It didn't matter if it was done on my own machine during hours I didn't bill to them. Needless to say, I crossed out those parts out of the contract before I signed. The responded that I couldn't do that and that I had to sign it as is or else I couldn't have the job. I told them that I couldn't do that since I had other clients and did also did work on my own projects. After quite a bit of complaining and threatening on their part, they eventually agreed and the parts were removed. It was amussing though that they kept threatening that I couldn't have the contract unless I signed it 'as is'. It was clear they had nobody else to do the work since they kept coming back.
Coincidently on the drive home NPR had a story about this very topic. Apparently due to the recent increases in real estate value compared to rent increases, it currently makes more sense for people to rent than to own. You get an equivalent place for less money both in the short and long run. They also suspect that we are seeing a large bubble in the real estate market that is going to burst in the near future.
The rampant speculation has moved right into real estate. Prepare for the next great crash, with greater consequences.
I agree with you on that. But it's been a long time coming. I'm ready to buy, but I've been waiting for the bottom to drop out so I can swoop in. No luck yet.:(
Industry analysts say that only about 1.5 percent of the people who download shareware ever pay for it. Snood is said to do better than the industry average, though Dobson won't say how much. His business partner says more than 30 million copies have been installed since it was introduced, or about 10,000 per day.
At $10 a pop, he's doing pretty well if 1.5% are paying.
Originally he was going to take off and land in Calafornia, but they changed it so that he would have a larger portion of the continent to land in if he ran out of fuel. They also didn't take off from the east coast beacause they wanted a place to land if something went wrong during the initial asscent to flying altitude. According to something I read, that was the most difficult part of the flight.
From what I found online, BSG is running about 3.1 million for the SciFi channel while Enterprise is averaging 2.87 million viewers for UPN.
Yes, BSG is doing better and you can argue that cable generally has lower ratings than broadcast. In theory, BSG would do better on broadcast and gain even more viewers. The problem is though that UPN is a crappy station.
Can you name one show on it other than Enterprise?
Can you name a show other than Enterprise that doesn't suck?
People that like Enterprise tune in, but it's not like SciFi where a show can feed of another's popularity. I watch Stargate so I see ads for BSG or BSG comes on afterwards and I stay tuned. I at the very least get reminded of it's existence via advertising. Enterprise isn't advertised well and has nothing to feed into it.
I think it would do better on SciFi where it would be more visible. Most scifi fans have cable anyway, I doubt they would lose many accidental viewers.
It already has the viewers to be a success on cable.
By releasing packages before the update is made available, you are almost asking for current users of Firefox 1.0 to download the full 1.0.1, which will result in a higher load on your servers.
Yes, but it will also result in a higher # of downloads. It smells to me like there might be some stats padding here.
Don't you think the credit card company is going to catch on to this pretty quick. Boy, half of abc company's transactions are being flagged as fradulent and costing us money, I guess we'll do nothing about it. You also don't get paid immediately by the credit card company, there is quite a lag time. I don't think that scam is going to go far.
I'd be more concerned about some bum hacking this and figuring out how to replicate the signal for people's cards.
1 gallon of waste does not produce 1 gallon of oil. You'll likely get a majority of water produced with a much smaller fraction being natural gas and oil.
Subsidies usually result in overproduction and overconsumption, financed by the taxpayer.
Not all subsidies are bad, some are used to correct a wrong that the market cannot. The point of subsidising this is to bring it to an efficient point of production. This process has real benefits to society as a whole that the producer can not factor in to his cost equations. This process reduces pollution and reduces the amount of waste in landfills. The point of a subsidy would be to quantify this benefit and then pass it or a portion of it on to the producer in order to produce at a equilibrium point that is optimal for society.
Actually, the carbon gain from this is 0. It takes carbon that is already in the environment and reintroduces it. This does not have the same environmental impact as taking carbon that is locked up under ground and releasing it into the environment.
Burning oil that is produced in this way has no net effect on the atmosphere.
Doesn't this process consume more energy than it produces?
No, there is a net energy gain. Part of the reason is they are burning the natural gas they produce to heat the mixture. If it was just that though, they would lose energy. But they are also recycling the super heated water they produce back into the new mixtures in order to save energy on the heating process. This allows them to only have to use the natural gas they produce and leave the crude oil for other purposes.
Discover magazine has run a few stories about it in the past. This tech is impressive. I just wish they'd go public so I could invest a little. I think it would do quite a bit better than my environmentaly friendly mutual funds. It would also be nice to help them expand faster.
Troll? Have you never seen the South Park movie?
Blame Canada

Curious, if I create a simulation and can acurately predict past events for which we do have records, can't that simulation extrapolate backwards and forwards within some margin of error?
Well, yes, it will predict events within a 100% margin of error. The problem with your assumption is that you use past data to create the model, so naturally it should be able to predict past events.
You need to be able to prove causation versus correlation. Before the Packers v Redskins game in October, announcers pointed out that election results matched the Redskins last homegame before an election results. The Packers won that game which according to that model meant Bush should have lost the election. Sadly, the model did not hold up, but before the election it was a sound model.
Just because past data fits the model doesn't mean the model is accurate.
Besides, trying to argue the matter using science with people that don't believe in science won't work. It's just like evolution, you aren't going to change their mind using facts, logic and reason.

Social engineering, I'd start writing dialog boxes that require you to click no.

Whatever happened to 'do no evil'? It seems pretty clear that in order to be a telcom business, you have to be evil.
Wouldn't he need to die in the pacific islands in order to be compared to Magellan?

You should have saved that, it could have been a quart of oil.
