  2. Could this be tied to the Broadcast Flag? on Extra Daylight Savings May Confuse the Gadgets · · Score: 1

Not trying to alarm people, but doesn't it seem odd. What does most people do if something doesn't work correctly? They go buy a new one. If their VCR or DVR fails to record their favorite show because the time is off, a lot of people will simply buy a new one after resetting the time becomes a 'hastle'. Then the new VCR, DVR or whatever, assuming that congress eventually rams through the broadcast flag, will abide by this. Out with the old, in with the new....

I purchased an eMachines Athlon64 notebook which came with a dvd with a hdd image restore. When that machine died within the warranty period (long story short, apparently the power supply was hit by lightning without me knowing, but it still worked fine) i returned it to Best Buy which returned it to eMachines (which had been purchased by Gateway. So, it was "unable to be repaired" SO i got to choose a new notebook.

On display was a Gateway Athlon64 (almost identical to my previous eMachines) which I chose as my replacement (with better specs as well). But this time it did not come with restore cd's, it came with blank cds in which to burn the hdd image onto. There was an option for burning onto cd's (the ones provided were very cheap) or a dvd (guess which I chose).

All in all, if it were someone like my mother who had purchased this notebook and experienced a hdd failure she would undoubtedly have been faced the same thing you did.

Well, the print being projected is only as good as the projectionist who builds the film. I have only very limited experience with this through a friend who is a projectionist. I actually got to watch him build RotS. It came on 7 small reels which have to be spliced together into one long version. This is typical of about any movie currently. If the film is wound too tightly then you can get scratches which make the film look 'dusty'. Over time, if this continues to happen then the film continues to degrade at an accelerated rate. Don't blame the film in all cases, blame the theater. I, for one, went to an extremely crappy showing. The 12:00 showing ended up being a 12:50 showing with several major problems causing some very irate fans. They oversold the viewing and had to string the film through multiple projectors. So, they start one movie, wait a bit so they have plenty of reserve then string what has already been through projector A over to projector B and start the film there. It was a very disappointing showing and I plan on getting a refund.

  5. I'm not too worried... on The Register Finds Fault In Turion Benchmark Setup · · Score: 5, Interesting

My first laptop was an Athlon 1.2, and the battery life majorly sucked (i'm talking mere minutes not even close to an hour), you may have even said "battery...what battery?" So when I enrolled in a Game Dev class I needed to upgrade due to crappy video. I got an athlon64 based system and my friend got a Pentium-M centrino system with similar video and similar processor speed, etc. and my machine will run circles around theirs. If i'm running on battery, I dim my screen, etc. Granted, I do not have quite the battery life as they do, but I feel I have a very nice balance between power and battery life.
AMD has made some major headway in the mobile processor market and I believe they will continue making improvements. Just look what they did with desktop processors and look what they have already done with their mobile processors. Its unfortunate that the test setup was flawed, but the 'centrino' package is being pushed very hard in advertising. I'm not trying to make any excuses, and I admit that I haven't done much research since I got my notebook, but are there many notebooks offered with the 25 watt pentium-M that isn't centrino based?

  10. Re:This is good on OpenGL 2.0 Released · · Score: 1

I have programmed in DirectX because my Game programming class required it and i have to say the API was horrible. I have looked at OpenGL and the API looks much better. The biggest problem is that OpenGL is just a graphics API, many people use DirectX for DirectInput and DirectSound instead of having to write their own input or sound. However, I hope that this will nudge the game industry back towards OpenGL.
