So this engineer that did many fabulous things in his lifetime (maybe he patented some stuff?) dies and goes up to the Gates of Heaven. When he arrives St. Peter looks him up and can't find his name! "Sorry you're going to have to go to Hell"
So the engineer is in Hell for a while and realizing that it is quite hot, he starts doing something about it. He developes airconditioning. He installs it first for himself, but then for many other damned souls. Once he has done this he moves on to make Hell a more pleasant place, designing parks with fountains, putting in water fountains. All in all, Hell is starting to be a pretty damn pleasant place.
Of course God looks down and is totally baffled by what is happening, Hell should be terrible! He summons Satan forth and proceeds to interrogate him.
"What is going on?"
"This engineer is doing great things."
"Well he is obviously a good person, let me check something"
So God goes to St. Peter and asks him why this engineer is not in Heaven. So St. Peter checks his books and realizes he sent the engineer to Hell by accident.
So God goes back to the Devil and says "He belongs to me return him at once!"
Of course the Devil refuses "Hell Naw"
God proclaims: "Give him back or I'll SUE!"
The Devil replies with a smirk: "How are you gonna do that? You don't have any Lawyers!"
Its long, but I think its kinda relevant:) (Btw this joke was told to me by my uncle who is an engineer married to a lawyer)
Well if they do make an open source version, you would have the option of running it on your OWN webserver. This is the true beauty in my opinion, because I want to be able to edit things wherever I am. I also want to have control of my files, so If I can install it on my own webserver I get both.
This doesn't support Google or some other big company picking it up, but it is a good reason to have the open source options out there.
and I think its catching. Many people like to clamor about us (the U.S.) supporting this fascist regime, but I think our cultural and economic influence on the Chinese people is getting them more addicted to freedom. The government may make proclamations like this, but for the last hundred years the chinese have been trying to get government right, look how its changed.
The next generation is growing up watching downloaded episodes of Friends (piracy IS good) and are now bestowed with a sense of freedom that can't be squelched by the government. From my visit there it seems like the educated kids do spend a lot of time thinking about what is right and wrong and they long for freedom, and I think the internet will play an important role in giving it to them.
On another note I would like to point out something that many Americans forget when criticizing the evil Red empire, this country is HUGE. They have cities with populations of our STATES for god sakes. They have been trying to govern millions of people for over 3000 years, and for all the bad things that have happened, they have figured a lot of things out. When you have 300 MILLION people moving to the cities in the next 10 years, should we open up the electronic polls in the next 5? thats the population of the ENTIRE United States, and lets not forget that theres more where they came from (the countryside). I'm not saying that we should let evils go without a fight, but I think that people should consider that its not as simple as just saying "your free" (hell, we are trying that in Iraq right? Hows that goin?)
pick up your legos and leave me alone.:D
I think the program is cool. Before this article I didn't know that you could order custom bricks in bags. Its a realization of my childhood dream of pressing a button and the lego piece you were looking for just pops out. Awesome
Dont be fooled by their PR campaign to mindcontrol you. There isn't a company out there more bent on copyright control, if you dont know what I mean just go to legos.com and look at this dispicable copyright notice. Before you know it they will be sending out DMCA C&D letters for building with their bricks!!
welcome to LEGOdot...
Your reasoning makes no sense. A product should not be improved because only elite members of society can use it?
Perhaps you wish that only Bentleys and Ferraris were produced, because otherwise people would start driving cars and crashing and it wouldn't take any time or knowledge to do so.
If you liked bittorrent for legitimate reasons you would be presented with the exact same arguement you just gave for shutting down bittorrent.
The substantial non-infringing uses outweigh the infringing uses, and furthermore making publication of content more available is a fundamentally (as in free speech) good goal.
Websites are a strange medium. Things like greasemonkey and adblock and google toolbar have been spurring these debates about content control.
I would not be suprised if this debate grew bigger as the popularity of client side controll apps gets bigger.
Alot of people want their webpage to look the way they intended it to look, but I think the truth is that you can not count on that. Different browsers, different computers, different monitors...
I am in favor of client side tools, I think that a user getting the best use possible out of a site is a good thing, in fact that is my goal when designing a website. If they think they can do it better, be my guest.
This "free trade" idea only works if all countries are created equal.
You obviously have no grasp of economics. Free trade works BECAUSE countries are not equal. A country should specialize according to its comparitive advantage.
I think it can be argued that this outsourcing is part of the natural cycle of growth in the computer industry.
Computers started out as custom built machines by scientists of high education. Now they are built by 3rd world countries. Why are you not crying that computer manufacturing should be done in the US? Programming is (arguably) the same way.
This is some of the most basic economics (I have only had one class in international trade). There is no "unfair" competition going on, people need to learn to adapt to a changing economy (this includes me, as I will be going into the CS field when I graduate)
What about a plugin that rips off the DRM and converts your songs automatically into mp3.
I dont know much about the different DRM schemes and formats (id like to, any resources?)
I know this isnt the most legal or ethical thing, but how will they account for this?
Hmm unless I just havnt heard about it I guess no other download service has really been hit by this, but they also dont support plugins that would make it easy to automatically convert the users whole library from within the program.
But the worst case of software patent abuse is when patents are made to protect obvious ideas.
I think that the nature of software being rapidly changing promotes progress, rather then patents. I still have a good bit to learn about all this, so Id like to thank you for pointing me towards Kenneth Arrow.
as opposed to tv and bittorrent, our two options now?
With tv you get what they give you from one source, and with bittorrent its similar, at least if google does it we will have one more option. And if more people start doing this, im sure content producers will put their content on multiple platforms.
I think this is better then what we have now, even if yahoo! video comes out.
Bnetd was writting a look a like and also reversing a protocol. Is bnetd a parallel case to this?
I think many/.ers were pro-bnetd. This FOSS stuff and "misquoting" is inciting alot of flames.
I think an important line can be drawn in web applications. That line is communication. Apps that are for communicating work well as web apps. Apps that rely on processing power should be left to the desktop.
The obvious example is Gmail. Many people like being able to log in from anywhere and handle email. I think IM/IRC should also migrate to web app.
I am reluctant to predict that photoshop and games will be thin unless we have some major breakthrus in bandwidth and power. Untill we do it's counter intuitive. Thin clients should be exactly what they are called, thin. Communication that you want to do no matter where you are!
Relatedly, the BBC is reporting that iTunes is under investigation in Britain for charging disparities between the UK and the European continent.
In other news...
Pounds are worth more then Euroes
Im guessing that it was a marketing budget to spread the word of Mozilla in Europe.
If that is the case then Im not sure what putting out bounties would do with that specific amount of money, Im willing to bet the foundation earmarks other funds for that kind of stuff.
As many have pointed out advertisers will go beyond annoying to reach that.01% that will buy. This is nothing new.
My problem is that javascript gives the website control over your browsing experience (also mentioned), and I think this is a good thing. Popups can be a useful way to show some information without leaving a page and having to hit back or find a link. They were until advertisers abused them.
Now we have dhtml, which allows for some really smooth stuff like divs/iframes that act like windows. "Floaters" can be really useful too, and I hope they dont get blasted out of existance nondiscrimately.
The best thing about css+javascript+dhtml is that its not unreasonable to make a multiplatform "application" that many people can use. This is very useful in internet mapping (not the mapquest type, the GIS type). Previously mapping was restricted to desktop applications, but now people are coming out with better "applications" that can be used on the web without plugins being installed.
I like some of the solutions, where the adblocking will see the 3rd party address and block the div. We can only hope that worthwile sites see the value in interesting and nonintrusive ads (google ads). But even major companies like the Times cant figure out that free registration hurts them.
I guess we will see, but ultimately I think its a market driven thing, and the market will adapt to the new technologies.
Previous posters have asked why stop real money from coming into contact with the game?
I think its because they want to have the game played as it should be, by everyone. This is what the TOS (or EULA) is for, to terminate service for anyone who ruins the game.
I personally am working on some botting software, I cant stand playing that game for hours;D
It was the same way in D2. Im sure there are some moral issues with it, but none that I have heard to sway me.
(I hate FPS hackers, where the game is based on skill and not time played)
these dastardly koreans have been training for war for years, they are an unstopable force, as anybody who has played starcraft in the last 3 years would know... huk huk

Arstechnica has a nice review of all the windows desktop search tools:
h .ars

Of course it has the beta of the MS search, but a pretty good guide I think.

So are you and the author trying to say Bill is like Hitler ;)
I'm not saying that, Im just sayin.
