  1. Re:Three Letters: on Best Degree to Pair w/ a B.Sc. in Computer Science? · · Score: 1

Much of corporate america has converted to the dual ladder allowing technical people to develop without having to go into management. That said, it is much more difficult to advance up the technical ladder. The average to good technical person is well advised to pick up a MBA if their employeer will pay for it. It increases your marketabilty and your paycheck. Few higher degrees pay for the time invested. I figure my masters in computer science and ph.d electronic engineering were costing me 10-20k/yr when I was working. More so now that I am between jobs as those extra credentials make finding work that more difficult. Go for the higher degree in a field you are interested if you enjoy the process. Go for a MBA if you want to increase your erning potential in corporate america.

"Is there something I'm missing? Or is this whole dual-core mess really just SMP on one CPU? Because from what I've read on the likes of Extremetech, Anandtech, and so on, I'm not finding any reason to be impressed."

The likes of you are not going to be impressed. A majority of computer users are far better off buying a faster single processor than a multi processor system. Even if it only costs 20% more for a dual core chip, most computer users would see more improvement by spending that 20% to buy a faster single core chip.

This may change as dual core processors become common and developers write multi threaded games. But until then, gamers are much better off spending that extra money on a better video card, more memory and rarely a faster processor.

There are not a whole lot of applications out there that are processor limited. Most are I/O limited. People who run applications that are processor limited know it and rejoice multi core processors. The rest of you can rest assured that you will see benefit from it in a couple of years and not worry about it until then.

Also, many of these applications are well suited to streaming data in and out of memory. RDRAM was / is known for high sustained data throughput but less than stellar random access. That makes it well suited for video memory but less than optimal for main system memory on processors unless the processor is designed to burst blocks of memory in and out of cache.

Other games have had to deal with downtimes as well, and have compensated their players with subscription credits. A day of credit for every hour the servers are down up to a week for every day the servers are down may not adequately compensate the player but it certainly helps.

Ozone generating air cleaners are used extensively in greenhouses and hydroponic applications. Products made by people like http://www.uvonair.com/ may meet your requirements as long as you are careful to match ozone output to the volume of your workspace. Too little won't work very well and too much can be hazardous.
