    Forever? I don't think so. I'm pretty sure the primordial ooze 6 billion years ago did not contain the genetic code for pretty little wild flowers, and yet they exist.

    Someone said it when they were using Word for Windows, flummoxed by the myriad of controls: "Good lord, I don't need to launch a Space Shuttle--I just want to write a letter!"

    If that's all he wanted then why did he buy and install Word when Wordpad is already on the box? Oh wait, then he couldn't bitch about the complexity of Word.

    If you use the web at home to do nasty, illegal stuff you can be tracked down through your ISP. This just extends that tracking ability to reprobates who try to hide behind library computers.

    Most endeavors in science have become so expensive that there are only two types of entities that can fund them: governments, and large private corporations. The latter are far too risk-averse to actually do anything *big*, so its pretty much left up to governments.
    X-Prize is not big? America's Space Prize is not big? Artificial heart not big?

    That's really a red herring. After all, where does federal funding come from? From taxpayers in the several states, of course. It's not like the federal government has a magic money tree. You and I are going to pay for it. Whether the money comes from your state taxes or your federal taxes won't make much difference.

    I think you'll find they are wanting to use it as it is 'free' as in 'not produced by a company in the country that has maintained a remarkably schizophrenic attitude to Cuba, attempted numerous coups and asassination attempts against the leader and is currently forcing the general populace to live below the poverty line by punitive trade embargoes all based on misplaced ideology' :).
    I've never understood this line of reasoning that the US embargo on Cuba causes them to live in poverty. It is only the US that won't trade with Cuba. China, Russia, The EU and most of the world have no restrictions on trade with Cuba. You can buy Cuban cigars anywhere outside the US and travel from outside the US to Cuba is largely unfettered.

    It is quite common for the initial market leader in a given technology to be ecclipsed.
    Apple -> Microsoft/IBM
    Netscape -> Microsoft IE
    Wordperfect -> MS Office
    Lotus -> MS Office
    Compuserve -> AOL
    Nobody would have predicted any of these when the original products where the dominant market leader. It's a better than even money bet that the same thing will happen to Google.

    How about the zillion different distro's of Linux. How many non-geeks have looked into using Linux and been stopped cold when they had to pick a distro?

    This will be much lower that "a billion dollars", but it will also be higher (possibly much higher) than the marginal cost of production plus overhead (a proxy for the price under free competition).

    In any industry where margins are very high, new companies will enter the market to compete for those margins. The dearth of new pharmacutical companies says that margins are not extreme. The cost of developing a new drug and overcoming the regulatory hurdles to bring it to market: $802 million on average, according to a study by Tufts University. Even then, only three in 10 market drugs produce enough revenues to match or exceed the average costs of research and development.
