please check out OpenMind Publishing Group and OpenText Project. The idea is to generate textbooks from open licensed works. It is a for profit company and has received funding.

OpenMind is leading the initiative to replace traditional textbook publishing with an automated, online process that returns the power of teaching to professors and enriches the learning experience for students. We have transformed textbook publishing into a real-time dynamic process by providing an open source environment where textbooks are:
    - Free to professors, 70% less than traditional cost for students
    - Free of exclusivity
    - Free of the finality associated with content in a traditional text

From the OpenMind website: While the idea of open content textbooks might be new to academia, the concept of information sharing certainly is not. From dissertation defenses to conference white-papers, the concepts of collaboration, peer review, and group-enhanced projects are evident throughout the academic community.

Our mission is to use these traditions to create the most dynamic, thoroughly reviewed and highest quality textbook content available today. OpenMind will support open content and the OpenText Project by providing grants for content development. We will also look to you...the members of the academic community, for participation by adding your content, insight, and supplementary teaching materials.

All content on the OpenText Project website is freely available for modification, use, and non-commercial redistribution under the OpenText Project License.

interesting comment. i think that xml in general can be used to solve some of our pain. the idea is to write to a standard dtd which is extended for the various subjects (math, physics would need extra elements). as tools improve, you can write import utilities which will import from framemaker and word. it will be tough, but as the dtd becomes a standard, programs will be made which assist author by forcing templates (if you want to stay in the standard.)

  19. Re:Some thoughts...a couple more things.... on U.S. Post Office and E-mail · · Score: 1

Here are a couple more thoughts. I would love to hear some feedback on these:

1 - Government is slow, realy slow. They will have a very hard time adapting to these changes for several reasons - most are outlined in the article.

2 - In the past (a long time ago), there were issues with infrastructure, cost etc of setting up and maintaining a national post service. This is changing. Now there are fewer barriers and there is competition.

3 - There is still a need for the service they are providing. However, if the service s not used as much, we should cut the budget accordingly and be happy.

4 - The USPS should not try to enter areas that are currently being addressed with provate business, which will naturally be more efficent. I do not see any problems with the post office downsizing. It is a bastion of the US, but we should be able to move on and advance and not have to hold onto old, outdated services just because uncle sam wants to.

ok i did not want to but

5 - Lets make the USPS a public certificate authority and start getting competion (even artificial - ie government) in that area. The USPS would have a great image that they could market and leverage that could compete against Verisign and their high prices and questionable procedures, they are soooo quick....

Let's give them participatory democracy and see what happens. I bet there are candidates who will love it. It will attract the underdogs, and probably the lunatic fringe as
    well... but what a show.

I don't think that is what anyone in politics wants anymore. I am so fed up with the political scene, it is so corupt. I am even more upset with the largely weak-minded, pop culture American people who believe - without even questioning or thinking for themselves - anything they read. The fringe does not matter to the candidates, other can be too easily brainwashed.

Without too much of a rant let me make a couple points that people should kep in mind:
o Campaign finance reform - someone who is not rich or very well connected to the rich canhardly run for office and CANNOT win a major election. Because of this business interests run the govt.

o Because of a lack of really devisive issues, most candidates will tend to be faximilies of each other as far as stances on issues - just a couple minor difference. Candidates now must sell themselves with personality (read b.s.-ing) ;)

o I would love to see a completely imaginary candidate run using technology to support the election. I mean - get a great website, press releases, make up an identity, use some cool media production to fake interviews etc - i really think one major network would believe it and then the rest would follow. It could be a candidate how lives by the rules of open source. Too bad the candidate who would govern this way does not exist.

One thing is certain though, Bill Gates has a fabulous mind for this sort of mental gymnastics. He is able to interpret and reinterpret everything as he sees fit - really beautiful arguements here.

I have always been under the impression (and I think so have many others) that Gates is a really, really, smart guy - but that Allen was the true technical mind behind the stuff. Gates knwe it because he fooled around with it so much. However, from a business/law and angry youth standpoint - Bill has a huge chip on his shoulder that allows him to believe anything he has to in order to succeed.

    What do you think?

I think that keeping your eyes on what is happening at colleges is the best way of keeping your eyes on trends that will soon be mainstream. One case of this was mp3s. The rampant use of them on college intranets was widespread 3 years ago. It seems just now this is being reported (Wired) .

Now we hear about other benefits of the big pipe. Those kids just keep moving the target further and further away for the private corps who are trying to satisfy the public - it is really great. If any large corporation really wanted to see what is going to be cool in a couple years (or months?!!?) they should employ (and listen to) a panel of college tech student. If they don't the students may just have to do it themselves.
