  5. this is a piece of hardware they're selling?! on UDP + Math = Fast File Transfers · · Score: 1

Strikes me as kind of odd that they need to make a piece of hardware to do this, especially when they say that it "relies instead on the computational power of standard PC processors" and "The translation is straightforward enough to be handled by a Pentium III processor" ... so why not just sell the software to do this? I suppose then they wouldn't get $70,000 a copy for it.
    ...
ok, I think I'm answering my own question (partially) .. according to their website the "box" they keep referring to in the article is a special server (1.5Gbps and 5 or 85 GB of storage) with their software on it. And you don't need two of these boxes for a complete connection. The server comes with a Fountain Client program to receive transfers. And they sell an SDK to make your own clients as well.

seems like they should've mentioned some of this in the article

  10. Re:1st saturday on Computer/Tech Flea Markets? · · Score: 1

Yeah, First Saturday is extremely nifty. They even have a website, listing vendors and stuff. There are all types of people selling computer/electronics stuff there. Some have stores in town and set up a table to sell their usual goods, others just bring the boxes and boxes of bits and pieces to sell. I've bought quite a few used network cards for $5 there. Seen lots of ancient looking equipment just walking around .. oscilloscopes, vacuum tubes, old cell phones. You don't always know if the stuff is functional, but it's fun to look anyway.

You can usually find the the Ghost in the Shell soundtrack on CD at anime conventions or stores that specialize in anime and manga and other nifty Japanese stuff. Might also find it on some of the places that sell anime and things online.

However, it may be a bit pricy (as high as $60 IIRC) since it's an import.

Or if you look hard enough (and if you're lucky) you can find the MP3's on the web somewhere :)

Exactly what I was thinking reading everyone else's disappointed reaction to the movie ..

I went in expecting it to be a better than average action movie with a somewhat decent plot, and I wasn't disappointed.
The stunts and effects were very cool looking and fun to watch -- yes, they were completely unbelievable, but I usually don't expect reality in an action movie like this one.
The unrealisticness (is that a word?) of the stunts is part of what made them so cool ..
especially the ending of the motorcycle chase where they rev the motors, drive the bikes straight at each other, leap off and grab each other in the air, the bikes collide and explode, and the 2 guys fall to the ground and start kicking the crap out of each other .. I was laughing so hard!

but I still liked the movie :)

  13. Re:Miranda - important to Nell and Hackworth on The Diamond Age · · Score: 1
I agree that Miranda was a rather important character, since she acted as a surrogate mother to Nell through the primer. She did provide continuity, which helped Nell growing up and prevented her from turning out like the other girl (don't remember her name and someone's borrowing my copy :) whose primer was read by a bunch of random ractors.

Miranda was also important to Hackworth's development of the seed through the Drummers. Right before she was rescued she was about to combust from what were probably the final stages of the Seed design. It sounded like she was the only one who could complete that process, so the Seed wasn't completed. I'm not sure if it was because the information and nanosites that were in her were lost when she was rescued ... or if the reason she had all the information and nanosites in the first place was because she was the best carrier for them.

Anyway, I still like Snow Crash better than Diamond Age .. after the first description of the Drummers I wasn't quite so eager to read .. still an amazing book though :)
