To be fair, if that happened to the US they wouldnt be too happy either. In fact, no nation would like that. You cant blame the French for being unhappy:)
There are many, many oilrigs off the shores of the UK, some nearing the end of their operational life (anyone remember the Brent Spar PR disaster?). Most already have data comms links to them (there is a room about 10' away from me filled with the equipment that is doing that as I type:), although they tend to be quite low bandwidth.
IIRC, the North Sea is actually quite shallow as there is no continental shelf between here and Norway, so it's not as expensive as you might think.
Woah, calm down. That reaction is uncalled for. I did not call you constitution pointless.
Barely any police in this country have firearms. The nearest unit to me (at this moment) that has access to firearms (and the authority to use them) is around 150 miles away, in Edinburgh. Also, your comment on involving the police in cilvilian matters is a bit of an underinformed statement. If you are referring to Northern Ireland, where protesting crowds have been frequently known to have elements armed with automatic weapons, then that is slightly different than the majority of the country. I also remember seeing archived film of your National Guard getting involved in civilian matters during protestations less than 30 years ago. Is it still the case now?
I am not meaning to anger you, so please do not flame me back. If I am underinformed, then educate me.
Which has to be one of the more pointless things about your constiution I can see...
This is the 21st century. If no-one else in your country had arms, why would you need them? We certainly don't need them over here, and consequently neither do our police. This means we have a far lower murder rate, which can only be a good thing.
Why? After the first proper car prototype was produced, was it lame that people should copy, and then improve upon it?
If someone has a good idea, but implements it in a way that you do not like (or can see room for improvement in), then IMO it's not copying it if you attempt to develop a better one.
I find this interesting that you mention this on/.. Since Linux is essentially a modified (arguably improved, since *ix is so diverse) Unix-like OS, it's probably the wrong place to state such silly opinions.
1) They used small arms and prepared molotov cocktails;
2) He didnt want to sink it, just inform the marines how serious he was...
3) Not AFAIK.
To stop a helicopter landing, you could use a mess of wires strung above the island, a cleverly positioned net, or a variety of other simple methods. The top area of the island is small it would be easy to do this.
They would have no real defence against a decent sized attacking force, but that isnt the issue. No nation would do it save for maybe the UK (which isnt likely, as they've committed to trying to not offend the UK government), due to it's proximity to the British coast. Also, the overlooked fact that the inhabitants are British citizens might actually mean the UK would fight *for* it, and not against it as the general view presented on/. suggests.
You definition of a "real" nation state is flawed if you discriminate against Sealand because it's lack of a formal military.
Battleships are kinda obsolete in modern warfare, as they're big, slow, and filled with guns that dont go as far as missiles.
I really dont think that even the US would consider a military assault on a tiny man made island 6 miles off the coast of a nuclear power and ally just because they've got some websites and newsgroups with Natalie Portman piccies and a few anti-China web sites.
Also, the debate about nuclear weapons is a non issue, as you'd end up killing a significant number of UK residents, contaminating a large area of metropolis and farmland, and angering a nuclear power (and dare I say ally).
Also, it's not likely to be Seals that would have a go at sinking the principality, it would probably be SAS/SBS, as the Americans seem very fond of putting British elite units in the line of fire instead of their own....
According to the Government website, in 1968 (a year after the principality was formed) they had an encounter with the Royal Navy in which they "fired warning shots". Personally I'd like to see what little damage small arms can do to an RN frigate... but if it is MI6 they sure have been working hard for 30-odd years to make it convincing....
IMHO treatment by location is best handled by routing. In this case, the captives of the current French regime should be firewalled off like crackers or any other threat to free societies.
Probably from the same place that gives nations the right to monitor other nations.

I dont believe Ireland is part of Echeleon. Where does it say they are?

I've never heard of courts being consulted before an invasion ;)

Yes, but international law prohibts nations using the expansion of their territorial waters to lay claim to land...
Also, I really dont think this is as big an issue as people seem to think it is...
